Pattern on the Earth

Post by nuttystar »

Does anyone know where I can get a really big, great and vivid chart of the Earth?

Just to explain.. I watched a TV program the other day about the lasting effects of humans on the planet. One of the things that particulary got to me was something called the "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch". This is basically a huge area in the middle of the pacific ocean where literally tons of human rubbish is trapped and dumped buy the ocean after being swept away from the asian and american coasts. This patch is so big it can even be seen from space! This rubbish will be very slowly broken down and will eventually form the sedimentary rocks (and therefore the cliffs) of the future! Imagine.. Your walking along the beach and you look up at the cliffs to see little pieces of coke cans and car tyres sticking out from the cliffs. And this is where the birds are choosing to raise their young! This absolutely appauled me.. To think that our rubbush will be the fossils for the furture "Time teams" to discover..

So... (And if I haven't lost you yet... Although you may think I have lost it...) I felt inspired to try and do something to promote awareness of what we are doing to our beautiful planet. The only thing I am any good at is cross stitch (and even thats debatable!!! haha), so I thought why not find an epic project like an HAED, of the Earth, complete it and then auction it! The money raised can go towards cleaning our mess up plus it will (hopefully) increase awareness. I can set up a blog to record my progress. I could even rope in some of you guys to help out by doing like a stitch-a-relay or something.... Everyone doing a page or something...

I have seen that Schim Schimmel on HAED does some really great Earth with cats charts which might be quite good. I quite like the one called "Cuddle time" (link here)

Any input would be appriciated :) Phew... sorry for the essay... :)

Was it the show Life after People?? I saw something similar mentioned in that... how the plastic in the water will become toxic and kill off essentially all wild life in that area..It's sad.. made definitley cut down my plastic use  I'd be willing to volunteer my stitching ability to a page in the stitch relay

I think Nuttystar was viewing 'How earth made us', correct? If you are interested in what's actually in that Pacific garbage dump, there's quite a lot of stuff on the net. This isn't the best delivered talk, but the guy captains the ship. (TED talks are, generally, good; find the one about glaciers by the photographer, well worth it). http://www.ted.com/talks/capt_charles_m ... astic.html" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

I absolutely agree with you, I never saw the programme but I have seen the 'patch' you were talking about, who could foget it! Your idea of stitching something and auctioning it is heart felt and I wish you well with it, I am a huge lover of Schim Schimmel charts and am doing Ice House just now, what ever chart you eventually go with, if you want it HUGE you can always do it on a 14 or 11 count to make the overall picture bigger, just do it in three or four strands, it will be amazing, let us know what you decide?

I thought of you when I saw the current issue of Just Cross Stitch, which has an ad for a new Charles Craft pattern in honor of Earth Day's 40th anniversary. It may not be just what you are looking for, but certainly sends the envirormental message.
It is called "If I Could Change the World", and you can see it at Charles Craft http://charlescraft.com/christmasdreamsdesign-1.aspx" target="_blank" target="_blank
Also, several other places are carrying it.
