Help.. its bleeding

Post by MaggieM1750 »

Ok, so I am working on a knotwork bookmark. I have finished the inside part, using a hand dyed thread from Weeks Dye Works. Its a green that goes into a reddish brown. The card says its not colorfast.. so before I started stitching, I and washed it in a bit of light soap and cold water and let it dry.

Well, I stitched up the middle of my bookmark.. and ran my fabric under cold water at lunch. I had made a mess of my pattern markings, so before I started on the other areas, thought I should wash out my markings. Just pulled it out to check if it had dried yet... my reds have bled! Help.. I washed my threads before stitching in cold, and rinsed today in cold thinking it would be ok. I am using just an off white aida.

Is there anything I can do?

 I don't know but maybe a bit more rinsing to see if the color will wash off and then dry it between two towels.

All you can do is rinse in cool water, again and again and again and again until the red stops running. Tedious, but it does work in the end. :)

rinse and rinse again, and Carrie (from Carrie's Threads) advised using synthrapol (a tiny bit or you'll be rinsing forever, she says) when washing hand-dyed threads, as it prevents the colour that you wash out from settling on the fabric. It's available from eBay for a few pounds.

Thanks for all your help.

In the end, I decided to scrap it and start over. The more I rinsed out the fabric, the more the threads dulled. I had spent a while stitching it up, but decided to start over. This time, I will stitch up the outside parts first, they use solid DMC threads and wash out all my markings, then stitch up the middle part with the overdyed threads.. no rinsing! I also heard somewhere to iron overdyed threads first, something about the heat sets the color. Who knows but it didnt hurt. I should be ready to start again tomorrow night.
