Will be starting a HAED soon!

Hi everyone!

As you can see, I'm new here. You will see me haunting this board with questions galore as I am relatively new to cross stitching.

I've placed an order for 25 count lambswool Jobelan, and it will be arriving by mail any day now. My questions right now are these:

>How badly does Jobelan fray? Would using nail polish to seal the edges do the trick?

>>Jobelan is supposedly a slippery fabric... does this mean my needle will glide through the holes easier?

>>>Talking about needles, what size tapestry needles do you use when working on a count 25 fabric?

Hi! Just wanted to welcome you to the forum. I know nothing about the fabric you mentioned or doing a HAED, but there are quite a number of others here who are very much experts in all that. I'm sure they'll be glad to help you out. Very nice blog by the way.

I do not work on evenweaves either but if you are going to be using that size of fabric then I would suggest nothing bigger then a size 26 needle.

The rest of your questions will have to be answered by wiser people then I.....

I haven't used the fabric you're planning on using before but I've never had a bad fraying problem with evenweave - just make sure you leave plenty for framing allowance and you should be fine.

On binding the edges there are various ways. I've tended to use masking tape as quite a quick way. I know others on here have used glue or have done it the "proper" way and have sewn the edge. There are also products like Fraycheck which are designed to stop your edges fraying. I guess nail polish would work, provided of course that you're cutting the edges down before framing. I'd wonder whether it might be more inclined to break off as time goes on than glue/masking tape though and also it might take a bit longer than other methods if you're planning on applying it with a little brush from a pot! (I'm quite impatient about starting new projects, hence preferring the super speedy masking tape approach )

For the needle, I'd seriously suggest a size 28 needle especially if your HAED is a full coverage one. That sort of density of stitching gets quite bulky and you may find it difficult even with a 26 needle to go through the holes especially when you get to filling in confetti parts.

Welcome to the forum

Nail varnish on fabric dries very stiff and is terrible for snagging your threads as you stitch. It also snags your clothes so I'd use tape or hem the edges. Sorry I cant help with the fabric as I haven't used it. Enjoy your HAED

I've only used aida, and I use pinking scissors to trim the fabric, and it never frays.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and pamelan, I'm glad you liked my blog. I did try to make it as attractive as I could with my limited abilities.

Okay, the general consensus is that I should be using size 28 tapestry needles. I've actually used masking tape in the past, and did not like it at all. Maybe I will hem this time. I'm hoping someone who has used Jobelan fabric will reply to me soon!

I am doing my HAED on Jobelan and there's quite a bit of fraying, I didn't do anything about it though as I have a lot of extra fabric and don't have a sewing machine or really know how to sew up the edges.

I use a sewing machine to stitch the edges....zigzag ...... and I use size 26 needles....I also use a scroll frame if the material isn't too large.....Q-snaps if too large for the scroll frame. I am stitching one over one on 25 ct Lagana, I think....I can't remember which since whenever I use evenweaves, my fabric of choice is Jobelan and Laguana.

Fraying bothers me quite a bit, but masking tape bothers me even more. I guess I will have to hem the fabric after all. Thanks for the input guys!

I'm using 28 count Jobelan on another project and have just left it as it is. It has frayed a bit, but not so much that I've felt I better do something about it.

lol. I took your stash advice to heart and ordered myself some Lugana to do my QS HAEDs on. As for the Jobelan, I guess I will hem it if the fraying is excessive. I will leave the egdes untreated for now. I really dislike using masking tape. Used it on Aida once, and hated myself for it.

Jobelan is my favorite fabric! I have basted it before (Folding the fabric over about a half inch and then sew it). It works well.

As for needle, I only use size 26. I find it slips through the fabric beautifully (I use the sewing method so it's really conducive to that.)

Thanks BeachDragon. Its nice to meet someone who actually uses Jobelan. Most other people I've met so far seem to prefere Lugana or Linen. I'll baste my fabric edges and hope for the best.
