I just tried to order five skeins of Flower Thread from Spinning Jenny who are in Yorkshire, so the same country that I'm in, and for those five skeins they were going to charge £5 postage !
I emailed them to ask whether perhaps there was a glitch in their shopping basket, because that seems rather over the top to me...
I can't remember who mentioned them selling flower thread, sorry, am terrible at names, you were doing the flower designs, and I think you said you'd ordered the whole lot off this shop? What was postage like for that?
"the shipping cost is correct but we reduce the amount for shipping smaller/lighter weight packets when we process your payment. Postage rates have recently increased and we put a standard charge on the system to cover our postage and packing costs. (My system will allow me to take a lesser amount but not a greater amount than that authorised.) I can understand that you were somewhat surprised but hope this explains
things - the shipping cost of five DFT skeins will be £1.90. (This has prompted me to make things clearer on the web-site!)"
I still think it's fairly steep for sending five skeins, which could easily go in a small jiffy bag and be sent as a second class Large Letter (51p, leaving almost £1.40 for the envelope and handling), but at least it's better than £5 and I like the fact that I got a quick and detailed answer, they obviously take their customers seriously which is a good sign. So I think I'll go ahead and order them -- I really would like to try them some time, so I'm going to get two greens and three pale yellows and do a flower (possibly a tulip -- I'm going through a bit of a tulip fase at the moment )
Yes, I ordered the range from Spinning Jenny in 2 lots and it cost £4.50 for postage (I don't seem to delete anything from my email!!!!) but I did order a lot of them at one time - so I didn't really think anything of it...!!

Planning to Buy!!! : Tuscan Gardens, Venice Palazzo, Mini Windows,
Got the threads today and they're lovely, but I'm a bit miffed about the postage -- on the envelope were a Large Letter first class stamp and 30p extra in added stamps, even though the parcel weighed about 40g and the Large letter stamp would have been sufficient (and I'd have been happy with second class, but let that pass for the moment).
I was charged £1.90 postage for the five skeins, and they put 30p in unnecessary postage on the envelope! Wat do people think, should I point this out to them or leave it?
You can say something to them but I would imagine that they are not only charging you for postage but what we in the states call "shipping and handling" and that includes the cost of the shipping parcel and the time that it takes someone to gather the product, package it, and get it to the post.
I know it says postage but they add in these other charges.
If you are looking for some one to help change you, look in the mirror
I know it won't help Mabel for this order, but you might like to bookmark a site I found recently for any further floss purchases
I haven't tried them yet, but Fibers And Threads ship anywhere in the world FREE for orders over $25 and $2.50 for orders under this price. They seem to change what they stock quite often - they did have Caron at a good price recently - and their products page says they will be stocking Danish Flower Thread soon
Has anyone used this site before?

Rose, that's a good point -- we send out a lot of things ourselves, and of course we always charge a bit for the packaging (padded envelope, box) and the time spent packing. However, if you send out a lot of parcels you should know the required postage, especially for a parcel like this which is so Standard that we have special stamps for them (Large Letter stamps, which cover anything of a slightly larger size than ordinary letters up to 100 grams), and she could have knocked 30p off the price she charged me simply by putting on the correct postage, and that's what annoyed me slightly.
Thanks for the link Susan! Looks like that carry quite a bit...the only downside is I didn't see any pics of the colors..that's the best part of going to sites like that lol
