I use Fray-check on just about every fabric I use -- linen, jobelan, lugana, etc. I've tried zipgzag stitching the edges and by the time I'm done with the project, things have frayed. The Fray-check works every time, I haven't had any problems with it. I do trim it off before I frame or finish the piece, though.

Don't use tape of any sort. I just went through my WIPs and had two of them that I started several years ago, on which I used tape on the edges. Not only did the tape dry out and crumble, it discolored the fabric wherever it was touching, and left behind sticky residue. Ick.

I'm just starting my first HAED (this week, actually, just waiting for the fabric to arrive), so all these suggestions are so helpful!

Just wanted to say that I LOVE jobelan and don't like to use anything else! It's softer so I find it alot easier to work with. I serge the edges by hand with a whip stitch using sewing thread... it takes forever, but I don't have a sewing machine and you have to do something or it will fray.

And for needles I have to recommend size 28 Piecemakers - best needles I've ever used and never had a problem with them breaking or discoloring.

All the best!
