Does this fabric exist?

Post by Capricious »

I'm looking for a 14 count or 28 count piece of fabric in deep blue or royal blue that is also opalescent/sparkly. The fabric needs to measure at least 18" x 18". Is there any manufacturer that makes this kind of fabric? I've tried looking around some online retailers and have been unsuccessful in locating this. Please help!

I don't know of any solid coloured fabric like that, but Sparklies hand dyes on 28 count lugana with sparkle so you could see if any of those colours are what you're looking for. They do a 18x26 piece, and they have two sparkly alternatives on most of the colours, OPAL (I assume this means opalecent, but if you find one you want to buy you might want to double check) or silver, which is a silver flecked Brittney.
Have never ordered from them myself as I only recently discovered the site but the fabrics are yummy!

ETA: if you do go down the hand dyed path you might want to check out Crafty Kitten as well, they dye opalescent 14 and 28 count.

I also wonder if you won't have to go with an overdyed fabric. Zweigart's 28ct metallic fabric only comes in six or seven colors, all of them pale. It you decide to go with an overdyed fabric, I wholeheartedly reccomend Picture This Plus. Great product, people and service. Not affiliated with them, just a very happy customer.

Well, I wanted deep blue fabric with some bling quality to it... I guess hand-dyed would do the job. I'll look around some more. I did have a question. What exactly is "Crystal Aida"? I came across it when browsing "Picture this Plus". I've only ever used regular Aida.

I know that Sew It All here have gorgeous new fabrics some with sparkles - just not sure if the UK main shop has it.

For Auz it is http://www.sewitall.com.au" target="_blank and I guess for the UK it would be http://www.sewitall.co.uk" target="_blank. You could give it a try. I know they had a medium blue in it.

It's aida cloth with the metallic "bling" threads throughout it. "Crystal" is PTP's designation for fabric with those sparkling threads in it.

Hmm... Thanks for clarifying, Mig-3. I think 14 count crystal aida, hand-dyed is exactly what I need. Everyone, thanks for all your help!

Just a note on the SewItAll sparklies, as far as I know they are fabrics that have a sparkly coating applied to them, not the ones with a sparkly thread woven into them. Doesn't have to be a problem, but they tend to shed (I sparkled beautifully after stitching a project on this sort of fabric) and if you iron them the glue (or whatever sticky stuff they use) melts and will stick to whatever surface you're ironing on. Something to bear in mind!

Yikes! Shedding glitter is not the effect I was going after. Thanks for the heads-up, Mabel.

You're welcome :-). I got some hand-dyeds from Crafty Kitten recently, that was the proper stuff, Zweigart Lugana with the sparkle woven in, lovely fabrics; I also asked her at the time about custom dyed fabrics and she said she could do that, so it may be worth contacting her -- her prices are definitely quite reasonable.
