Quater stitches AHH

How do you do quater stitches.
I know that you don't go all the way across that its just 1/4 of the stitch but do you make a complete x?

Are quarter stitches the ones where you come up through a hole & go down through the middle of the aida square instead of another hole & finish with a half cross stitch ? ....think that's it... feel free to correct me!! :?

In the glossary section Mabel provided a great picture of all the stitch versions, just scroll down a bit.

You do not make a complete x for a 1/4 stitch. You only make 1 line, half the length of the full stitch.

For 3/4 stitches I always make the small stitch first, then cross with the longer length stitch.

It is only one of the little quarter extentions/legs of the X, and usually there is one exactly opposite in the same line, e.g. making / or \ but It does not make a full X.

I often find that they seem to be lower than the rest of the stitching and fade away, especially if you stitching in two strand or more. What I then do is I go over it again (double stitching the quarter stitches) I find doing so makes them the same height as the rest and for me it looks better. (Hope the double stitching explanation made sense).

I followed the link Agi gave, it is a good example (as well as lots of other good to know info). :) Thanks for the link Agi!! :D

Those sound like squashed stitches. They are used by a few designers like Michael Powell and Margaret Sherry.
