Why Some Stitchers Don't Finish Threads?

Post by cassle »

I saw some WIP update or SAL photos and I found some works with LOTS of unfinished threads around the finished area.. Some people organize those threads like a flowing hair.. I don't know how to say this but it seems lots of people done this..

Why?

Is it because they don't need to begin a thread when they need it..? Is it really useful to make the speed become faster? Won't they feel confused which thread should be used..??

I keep wondering about this..!!

I suspect what you've seen is people "parking" needles, which is sometimes done if a piece has lots of colours and lots of "confetti stitching", so only a few stitches in each colour before you need to change. This way you pick up the colour you need, do the stitches, park it at the side, and pick up the next needle you need. I've never done it but I know some people find it very helpful.

Thanks Mabel, I searched up the term parking and I think I found the explanation here http://www.crossstitchforum.com/viewtop ... f=3&t=3909" target="_blank at the bottom of the first page.

Now I understand how they don't feel confused.. But will this parking method make thread fighting with each other? I mean.. If I park the needle (let's say) three box below, that means there will be a line of thread between those three rows.. When I stitch those three rows with different colors, will the 'line of thread' disturb the others?

I tested parking threads after I read about it here and was struggling with a design where the colors were all over the place. I was worried, much like you, that the threads would get all knotted and messy and be in the way. But I've really found that because they are on the front of the design this doesn't happen. I've also found that the thread in general just doesn't knot as much...maybe this is because I'm not boxing in my stitches with one color thread so that the next thread gets caught up in it when I'm trying to stitch each color individually. I don't know, but I do know I think it works better.

But for parking, I don't leave my thread just hanging either. I do keep it on the needle, so that might impact it not getting tangled on me too.

I leave my thread parked on the front, left on the needle. I also take a scrap piece of material and write the thread number/symbol on it and push the needle through it. That way if I have similar shades, I don't get confused. (and that's easy to do LOL)
