Needle size versus Fabric Count

Post by matilda314 »

*I thought I successfully posted this yesterday, but can't find it listed, so forgive me if this is somehow a double post*

Does anyone have a guide as to what size needle is generally recommended with certain fabric counts. I've only ever stitched on larger/lower count Aida, and am looking at trying another fabric or two, but want to be sure to use the right size needle according to the fabric count.
Thank you.

I usually stitch on 14ct aida or 28ct evenweave..... and my favorite needle is size 26. I will use size 24 but sometimes it feels bulky in my fingers..... but if the needle is too small and the thread tends to become thin while going through the holes, I will use a bigger needle.

I use size 26 needles on 14 and 16 count aida, and size 28 when stitching on evenweaves from 22-32 ct fabrics. in general, I prefer a slimmer needle.

The general rule of thumb is that a needle needs to be bit enough to temporarily slightly widen the space you are pulling the thread through. Otherwise the thread deteriorates and will break or fray. The larger the count, the larger the needle.

Really?!? So I'm doing it backwards? That's very interesting. I love that I learn new things on this forum. I'll try it out the next time I stitch!

Here's a link to a reference chart that you might find helpful, but it does look like most of us use the 26 for even 14 count. Its about 1/2 way down the page. It also talks about using a larger needle for things like metallics which I think goes along with what Serinade said about making a bigger hole temporarily to prevent fraying the thread.

Thank you for the link!
As for me the largest needle I use is 26, and mostly it's ok for all counts from 20 to 40 (for me), and it work pretty good with metallics as well :)
