Is this a good deal, or no?

Post by noctifyre »

Before I go out and spend even more money on them...

The local Joann's Crafts store is going out of business, and because of that I ended up purchasing A LOT of cross stitching stuff, since prices were marked down on kits with an additional 50% off that (so I ended up paying $5 or less for nice, new kits). /swt

Well last night I ventured over there and ended up buying a ton of DMC thread from them... originally .37, at 50% off .19. v_v; (for the basic thread)

Along with 50+ skeins of the regular thread, I ended up buying four of the metallics - 2xgold, 1xjewel, 1xprism, some kreinik metallic thread/accent stuff and a DMC spool of metallic thread (I don't know why I bought the latter two stuff - am I ever going to need them?) /swt

So... in your opinions, is it worth going out again and buying even more of the (regular) thread? :cake:

at 19 cents a skein...I'm surprised you left any at the store! The cheapest I've found them for is .33, so I'd say...why not make another trip out there? You can always use it for swaps. You never know what chart might catch your eye. And if years from now you find you have no use for it...you can always sell it!

Swaps? Good idea, though - I never thought of that.

I have yet to organise fully the skeins I got last night (minus the metallic skeins, and all the oranges... boy, are there many shades of orange or what! - I need more bobbins :( )

So I suppose I probably will head out and stock up on some more. :D I mean, for $20usd + tax, I could get 100+ !

(on an aside, if anyone's looking for specific colours I could check to see if they have them, and send them to you. :D I'd probably just need you to pay for s&h... especially if you're not in the US. :thinks:)

~

Along a related note, does anyone from the US know what brand the non-DMC floss is? The 'cheaper' option that only comes packaged in boxes... sold in Michaels as well, I believe. Just wondering if that type's worth buying and trying at all.

If I bought as much as I could afford, I'd end up clearing out their selection! Not to mention they'd probably hate me for holding up their line so much as they scan skein after skein...

My reply is that it depends on how you stitch.

There are several people on this site that have the whole DMC or Anchor collection. And there are also people that don't. I have less than 50-60 skeins and only buy for specific projects. My thread stash is project leftovers, and what I consider as basics.. red, black, whites, and couple shades each of blues, greens, purples, yellows, browns and pinks.
So I guess it really all depends on how you stitch. If you stitch mainly from kits, you don't need to have a lot of extra thread on hand. But if you stitch mainly from charts, well you're going to have to buy your thread at some point so it probably is worth it to buy it now and keep it until you use it. So hows that for a non-answer answer?
When I kit a project, and I need multiple skeins of the same color, I buy all at the same time to try and minimize any dye lot issues. Thats just me.. it may not matter to you.

But I am actually surprised that they are giving you such a deal on threads and kits. I would have thought that when one chain store closed, they shipped inventory to other stores, or back to the warehouse. Too bad your JoAnns is closing.. but good that you are getting such a deal- I have never seen DMC for that cheap. I am excited when I can get 4 for $1. And.. if you decide to go back and buy more.. don't forget about tools- needles, threaders, bobbins and boxes, hoops or q-snaps, washable markers, etc.

I actually asked the person at the register why they didn't just send the items they had to the other JoAnn's, and she told me that selling it off was the company's way of giving them more time for their job before it's terminated (since apparently not many of the workers will be transferred over to other stores).

The DMC/floss in general wouldn't have been sold at a discount if it wasn't for the fact that they had so much of it!

I also wish I bought more bobbins... I bought one pack of them, thinking that's all I'd need for now, before finding out that it only contained 56 of 'em. No more when I went back... I have more than enough needles, have never needed/used threaders, have enough hoops to last me for a while (though I did buy a scroll frame... frustrated with using it, however. /swt)

Planning on seeing if they still have the fabric markers I saw there.

I ended up buying 115 more skeins - pretty much picked at random, considering that part of the store was a disorganised mess! I'm sure I have a lot of duplicates, but hopefully not TOO many.

Found another thing of bobbins as well.

Purchased an embroidery transfer pen, along with three things of aida cloth (black, pale/sky/light blue and stardust)

Going to attempt going through all the skeins I bought, and figure out the ones I need still and perhaps make one last trip there to pick up whichever ones they have that I need.

Sales are so detrimental to saving attempts... :p

Ohhh! I love going out of business sales! (Well it's bitter sweet up here now, since I live in the middle of nowhere.)

I don't blame you, I'd have bought just about one of each, as many of the bobbins as I could find, and a boatload of anything else cool available!

Yup- total sucker for a good sale! I blame it on growing up in New England with all of that thriftiness ingrained into my upbringing!

That's a great deal! What a bummer about JoAnns. Was it a store you shopped at a lot?
