HAED Sale! And... Tent or full stitch?

Post by aundria »

I just bought my first HAED from Vanessa, and got inspired to up the stash a little more and went to get Wrath - I've been eyeing her for a while - and it turns out that there is a 30% off sale through Jan. 2!

So I do have a question for those of you who have done tent stitch on your HAEDs - are you getting enough coverage? Ideally, I'd like to do all 7 sins, and to do that in my lifetime, I'm pretty sure I will need to do tent stitch. What do you guys think?
WIPs:
Van Gogh - Skull with Cigarette (3 pages down, 3 pages half done, 3 pages blank)
HAED - 1/3 of one page done, one million to go
Dragoncloud (2 pages done, 28ish to go)

I tried on a scrap piece of fabric 25 & 28 counts, both full stitch with 1 strand of floss & tent stitch with 2 strands.

I was very pleased with the 2 strand tent stitch. The 1 strand full stitch looked off to me, but to do 2 strand full stitches was too much floss.

Granted I only did 10x10 blocks, but I'm already planning to use the tent stitch on mine.

That's a great idea. I was a little worried about doing one strand because I like to loop start, so two strands tent stitch might be my solution!

I've never worked with the higher counts before, so I will probably do some practice myself once I get the material. I think I'm going to do 25 count dublin linen.

Well, I did end up doing full crosses - I wasn't happy with the coverage on the tent stitch. So, I'm doing 2 over 1 full crosses on 25 count. The coverage is amazing, and I haven't had any trouble so far getting the floss through.

I personally prefer full cross stitches. I feel the coverage is better.

I also prefer full crosses, on 25ct, I like to do 1 over 1, and on 18 or 22 I like to do 2 over 1. There's just something about the tent that doesn't sit well with me, the whole feel of it looks slanted! And now I don't want to offend anyone, this is strictly my opinion, but I think of it as a little bit of cheating , I mean it is called cross stitching! But again that's just me, to each their own!

I'm stitching wrath too and did mine on 18ct, full crosses, 3 x 1. I am a little oddball for using 3 strands but love the coverage. Of course, I haven't worked on Wrath in forever and ever but if you search in the stitch a long section, you might be able to find my thread that has the pics in it. But as far as finishing all 7 of the sins in your lifetime, then yeah you might need to do tent stitching. It is faster from what I read on here.

I went to your website from your profile to see the pics - the coverage is excellent with the three strands.

After about 1000 stitches, I have now decided that 2 over one on the 25 count is not going to work, it's stretching the fabric too much to have the two strands, so the lines aren't looking as even as I'd like. I'm testing out 22 count right now... will keep people updated.

Were you doing full crosses or tent stitch? I'm curious as to how the 22 count covers because I want to do Compadres on a larger count. I'm planning to hang it about my tv in the living room and need it to be a little larger than normal. I haven't decided if I want to use 22 or 18 count.

I'm actually waiting right now for the 22 count fabric to show up, should be here soon.

If you want it to be large, I'd go with the 18 count - I'm doing a haed-like full coverage big project (a blowup of a sunset picture) on 18 count and I've very happy with the coverage.

I started with tent stitches on the 25 count, didn't like the coverage, switched to full stitches and didn't like the fabric stretching. Using only one thread probably would have helped, but I hate using only one thread, so there you go :) I'll just use the rest of that fabric for small pieces.

I'll be waiting to see how the 22 count works for you. I would rather do full crosses, but like you said, on 25 with 2 threads, its just looks to be too much for the fabric. The other piece I'm making is a gift for my friend's daughter, so I want to make sure its pretty.

I'm working on the freebie QS Curl up with a Good Book HAED and I'm working it on 22 hardanger fabric in 3 over 1 tent stitches. I love the coverage. I tried 2 over 1 tent stitches, but I didn't like the coverage for the darker colors. 3 over 1 is great coverage. I don't have a picutre up yet but I'll try to start a thread and put a picture up tonight so you can have a look.

I planned on scanning my progress and posting a picture on friday but the weekend kind of got away from me. I started a thread so you can see what 3 over 1 tent stitches look like on 22ct fabric.

I'm out of town for work this week, and I forgot to bring my camera with me, but the 22 count came in before I left. Doing 2 over 1 right now, I'll try to get a pic up this weekend when I get home!

I'm doing my first HAED now - 1 over 1 on 28 count. The coverage is excellent and it's not as difficult as I was afraid it would be. Have my trusty magnifiers (light and glasses, lol) and I'm good to go. It's a small quick stitch though. I'm going to play around with the tent stitch a bit before I start a full size HAED because it goes so much quicker :)

I'm stitching a HAED 2 over 1 on 25 count Dublin and am very happy with the result. Of course I need MagEyes to do this tiny stitching!
