Cross Stitch Glossary by a non-stitcher!

Post by SewingCafe »

Hello all. I just wanted to share a cross stitch glossary with you... the unusual thing about this glossary, was that it was put together by my husband who doesn't cross stitch!!

He told me that he thought that in order to help me with my business he would try and learn the lingo. He spent a lot of time researching on the internet and came up with this...

Cross Stitch Glossary

I'm amazed... though he talks about cross stitch far too much now!! I even heard him giving cross stitching advice to his mother (who does cross stitch) the other day. And he still hasn't actually done any cross stitching himself!

If anyone has any comments or corrections (please please let there be some corrections), please let me know and I'll kindly pass them on :D

I like it, very informative.

Gaining knowledge is the first step... next thing you know, your husband will be xstitching with you!

Very good and interesting in that DH is a non stitcher.

I do have a couple of things to add to the list though it may be nit picking - but all in order to help your quest.

Permin, yes it is a brand of fabric - but they also do cross stitch charts and kits.

Unpicking - is often called "frogging" or "reverse stitching" - takes away the negative idea of undoing something.

How lovely that he is interested in your hobby.

I think the term "embellished cross stitch" is not correctly explained - but I am not 100% sure. What does everyone else think?

What, no Hardanger :-)?

An admirable initiative, and very well done! One typo I found is Zweitgart for Zweigart, and of course they do much more than linen -- they do various types of cotton and cotton-mix fabrics as well, both aida and evenweave.

Isn't it wonderful how non-stitchy husbands/partners get interested? DH is beginning to recognise certain stitche, and can tell apart aida and evenweave with a fair amount of accuracy :-). It's just so nice when they take an active interest in our hobby!

Hello. Thanks very much for all your comments and suggested additions. I'll certainly pass those onto DH. I'll have to tell him off for the spelling mistakes :-)

I just quickly looked up embellished cross stitch and have come across two definitions, but I'll ask him to check.

If anyone else has any other comments or if there is anything else missing I'll certainly pass them on.

I'll ask him to add Hardanger, Assisi and Blackwork - that should keep him quiet for a bit :-)

If that doesn't keep him quiet for long enough he could always start on the different makers of kits, Dimensions/Anchor/Dmc/Country Threads/ L&L - the difference between Anchor/DMC US/DMC France/Madeira etc etc.

That should keep him busier even longer.
