In a quiet moment in store this week, we looked at your request below. In all, there are 31 DMC metallic colours. The stranded presentation is really not an approximation of Kreinik Blending Filament (KBF) as KBF is like a miniature ribbon thread.
It is impossible to match the KBF to DMC metallic, but you can try match the DMC to one of the Kreinik colours.
Problems
*DMC Metallic is too thick to give the same finish as Kreinik Blending Filament
*Light reflection and metallic colours on one brand do not match the other, making even the closest match very ordinary, or even big leap, with glasses on and in the dark!
*8 colours of the DMC do not have a KBF equivilent you would have to choose the Kreinik #4 very fine braid.
*We are not happy to list something on our site stating these are a substitute as they really aren't. It would make us look so clueless, it would be embarassing.
I would hazard a guess that is the reason you are unable to find what you are looking for.
As usual though VH you've gone to the trouble to try =}
Blending filaments, metallic threads and metallic ribbon floss are all different. Your best bet is to work out what colour you want then what thread, filament, floss etc gives you the effect you are seeking. Blending filament generally is going to give a whole different look to metallic thread ... it's tough work trying to match brand for brand - I've tried on several projects.
There is a DMC blending filement the same thickness as Kreinik/Glissengloss, it's their metallic no.279. You can also use Madeira machine thread no.40. They don't come in as many colours, but they have the usual ones like Gold, Light Gold, Silver and Pearl. They are a lot cheaper than Kreinik/Glissengloss as they come on large reels/bobbins of 100m (DMC) or 200m (Madeira). Hereis the shade card for Madeira no.40; the DMC numbers are similar but with "4000" added to them -- so light gold is 24 in Madeira, 4024 in DMC. HTH!
Edited:
Tandem Cottage sells Madeira no.40 at £2.25 for a 200m spool and DMC at £1.45 for a 100m spool; their stuff is good and not expensive, but they aren't quick. Sew & So (good service, usually delivered next day or so) sell DMC no. 278 at £2.03 for a 100m spool. They don't sell the Madeira.
