I'm being careful only to stitch for a short time each day, to rest my thumb - but I hate it! I just want to keep stitching, and it's very frustrating.
After the first picture I wanted to say a salamander, but now I agree with the turtle idea. Really lovely. Hope your thumb gets better soon.

Ok, you've got it! Aboriginal turtle. I think it looks rather like a native African shield, apart from the house-shaped head!
But it is upright, like that - it's just only half the shell stitched so far.
And thank you all for your good wishes about my thumb!

Cool! I was going to say I think the turtle fit best. I'm glad so many liked my worm in a girdle comment!
Can't wait to see more progress and a finished turtle -- I hope your thumb is better soon. I'm dreading going in for a shoulder issue I've had for several months, as I have a feeling that whatever they have to do, it's going to involve zero use of my sewing arm (was dislocated when I was little and it's always been 'loose'; now it's been giving me a lot of trouble w/ pinched nerves etc). I like cross stitching so much that I might have to learn to use my left hand and my mouth if that happens!
I'm really looking forward to seeing this completed it looks like a very unusual design. Looking great so far, keep up the good stitching!!

I haven't done any stitching since last time I posted - and my thumb is starting to improve. Says it all, really.
