Back again. Photos soon, but in the meantime, can I ask a favour of any of you lucky enough to have an iPhone 3 or 4. The exhibition now has an App! Wow! It even runs on an iPad, however it won't run on android phones -- grant was too small.

I have no idea what it's like, but the professor in charge thinks it's pretty cool (but then admits bias). Reporting back problems would also be useful. Thanks!!

The app is cool Serinde. Lots of information, great images,good directions, and very easy to navigate.I'm off for another look and being able to listen to the music from the images of the scores is brilliant.

My computational wizard of a DH muttered about the app not conforming to the usual apple style for apps (touching a button for the image rather than the image, for example). Did you find that a problem?

Hi Serinde, no I just used the app. qiute happily, as it is.The buttons that are there are, IMO, useful. Someone not familiar with using varoius apps may not think to swipe the picture as one does to view photos on an i phone, and they would not realise there were any other pictures to look at on any given visual topic, such as the enlargement of the John Knox picture for instance. That being said there are little indicators ,like full stops, at the bottom of images that have more than one picture,that indicates on an i phone that the user can swipe the first picture to the left to see the next one. Other than that I think it is a very neat app. not over crowded with info. just enough to pique ones interest,and I wish I lived a lot closer to Edinburgh.
I just have to add it would have been cool to have had a glimpse of your stitching on the app.

I've just recently moved to Dalkeith after 15 years of living in the centre of Edinburgh.

This exhibition is definitely top of my "things to do in the festival" list!

I hope you do have a chance to go, and it's free, and good for a rainy hour in Edinburgh during the festival. I think the exhibition runs until October.

In the meantime, you can pity me trying to learn either detached buttonhole stitch or (!) trellis stitch for these flipping strawberries. They are all I have left on the sampler, bar a few beads.

And now I know what size the blackwork examples are to be (about 3 x 12 inches), things are looking up... assuming I ever finish the capital letter... *runs around tearing out hair*

Sounds like a nice challenge . Have you seen Mary Corbett's videos about these two stitches? I haven't watched these yet, but have found several of her other videos very helpul indeed. here are the links for Trellis stitch and Detached buttonhole.

Indeed I have, and the trellis stitch one is particularly helpful.

I have also come across http://juststring.blogspot.com" target="_blank and she has some really excellent explanations (from 2008 and 2009 archive) of buttonhole stitches (Stitch Studies). This is one amazing embroideress!

Here is the completed sampler. Photo taken with DH's phone, which has more pixels now than our camera...


Also, for Mabel, a closeup of the Strawberries, over which I suffered. I had wanted to use trellis stitch and detached buttonhole, but found it impossible to do either stitch neatly (or convincingly) with a single silk thread. I would have needed thicker thread, which I didn't have time to buy, or finer cloth... oh, dear. However a solution did present itself, once I realised that I was dealing with blackwork: they have been completed using padded satin stitch and two different blackwork fillings. Simple, really. You can also see the other blackwork, from Holbein's portrait of Jane Seymour. (And yes, picture is sidieways.)
