Anyway to copy an old kit pattern?

Post by NewNeedsHelp »

I have 3 children. My oldest had a cross stitch growth chart made for him by his grandmother (now in a nursing home and can't make my twins one.) My sister has agreed to make us some. We wanted to get the same growth chart for the twins too. I actually found the kit on ebay, but only one. The kit is from 1977, so the likelihood of finding another is slim. I was shocked to find the 1.

Is there anyway to copy this pattern if I got permission from the manufacturer? I'm wondering if we could buy fabric and hang the pieces up against a window and pencil the pattern on the blank fabric. Would something like this even work? We would really love for each of the kids to have the same one.

Thanks for your advice.

Try sending off an email to the company that put it out - they may have one stashed somewhere or be able to send you in the right direction - alternatively if you have one chart already - kit it up yourself for the second one (buy the fabric/threads etc) and use same pattern twice :) good luck on getting them all a matching set! :D

So with these kits, the pattern is separate from the fabric? I figured the pattern was imprinted on the fabric to be stitched and could only be used once. (I know they're supposed to be used only once.)

Thanks for the suggestion! I contacted the company.

If it is a COUNTED Cross Stitch kit then the pattern would be seperate from the fabric and yes you can kit the materials up and make a second one. If however it is a STAMPED kit then the pattern will be printed on the fabric and it would be harder to copy.

OK, yes it is stamped. Thanks for the clarification. I know nothing about this! I just know I'm always amazed at what my sister produces!

You could try copying the stamped fabric chart onto graph paper, to make your own chart.

Depends on the stamped fabric, cause with some you don't always stitch over everything that has been stamped onto the fabric.

You might even be able to stitch the stamped one but don't backstitch it, then use that as a guide/chart for the second.

If you get permission to copy it, then just place the sections of actual fabric into your scanner if you have one and photocopy the pattern. Not too difficult. If you do not own a scanner you can take it to a copy place and they have large format scanners and can do it for you for a small price.
