Backstitch and dark designs

Post by Mermut »

I've got a design I'm doing in several color schemes for different people. I usually do my backstitch detailing in a dark color, but one of my schemes is blacks and greys. Obviously I need to use a light color for the backstitch on the 'inside' of the peice, but I'm wondering about the outlines. Would it be better to use a dark color along the outside and only the light on the inside or use the same light colored thread for all the backstitch?
If I go with the two-colored backstitch, I'm worried that the interior lines will 'pop out' too much compared to the other backstitch, but I'm not sure how well the light thread would work against a light fabric for the outside.

I'd be interested in people's ideas and suggestions.

Thanks ahead of time.

It's hard to know without really seeing what you're doing.. I would probably test out each idea on a scrap piece to see which one is more to your liking

I agree it would be hard to say unless we could see the design that you are stitching. Many designs use more then one color for BS so I don't know thta it would look all that bad.

I haven't actually stitched the dark piece yet. I've finished the blue/green one and am just doing the detail work on the red/yellow.

Here's a picture of the blue/green one:

I'm going to do the green back stitch in the red, but the details on the dragon I've done in dark brown are what I'm wondering about for the black/red design. (Basically everything that is blue/purple on the picture will be black/grey in the other color scheme.) I've got the colors for everything except the dragon details pretty much set. I'm finishing up the details on red/yellow version and I am just trying to get some ideas and suggestions for my next one. :)

If it was me I think I would do all of the outline in the same color and work it together. I think on a black fabric the lighter BS would really make it pop. :thinks:

I'm leaning towards using the same color for all the backstitching on the dragon. Since the dragon itself is going to be mostly in blacks and greys, I won't be doing the design on a black fabric as I think the design itself would tend to wash out.

Here's the 'dark design' I was asking about.. I've got it mostly finished, except for the backstitch on the dragon. I've got a floss color (DMC 415) tentatively picked out for the interior backstitch, but I'm still not sure if I should use it for ALL the dragon backstitch, or use something darker (like DMC 3371) for the 'exterior' parts of the design.

Thanks again for any feedback.

Comparing the blue and the grey I think that I would use the darker 3371 for the outline. That is just me though. :thinks:
