i cut mine to about 16 inches and always start using the loop method.

What is the loop method that so many have mentioned?

You cut the strand twice as long as you need it, double it up and thread it through the needle with the loop at the long end. You come up through the fabric and go back down making a half stitch and then pull the needle through the loop in the back which fastens the thread before you come back up again.

I'm sure someone can explain it better. I use it unless I have only a few stitches to make and so I am left with two seperate strands already threaded. and if that is what I have to start a different section of stitching with that color I fasten the first stitches by stitching over the ends in the back with 4 or 5 stitches.
