Stitchers in Stockport

Post by TrishaT »

A new stitching group is now up and running in Stockport. We meet each Friday at 10 am till 11.30am in the Hobbycraft store at the Peel Centre. No charge to join and discounts on goods purchased in the store. Come and join us and get your Christmas cards stitched in a break from shopping.

Perhaps I should make clear that we are nothing to do with Hobbycraft, they have just let us use their premises.

No, not a lot. People say they will come and then we never see them again. Stockport residents seem a very apathetic lot anyway and I couldn't find any clubs or groups of interest, which is why I decided the only thing to do was to start one myself and see what happened. I'll give it till Christmas and if there has been no response by then I'll admit defeat.

I've had a thought (that was the noise you heard). Are there any sort of classes being given at a local college or something where you could let it be known you have a group started? I found my lovely embroidery group by looking at the local library. Local council rooms are also a good place to advertise. Also let it be known that they can bring other crafts to do as well. I started out at a quilting group when I first came to Aus 6 years ago.

We are having notices put up in the local libraries and also have it in the local paper this week. It did start off as a cross stitch club but I have now dropped the 'cross' from the adverts and just refer to it as a stitching club hoping it will bring in knitters as well as cross stitchers....maybe crocheting and tapestry (desperation!). Still no interest. I am taking some knitting with me this week and will put it in a prominent position but short of tripping people up as they walk past I am running out of ideas.

Just to keep people up to date.....we have now changed the meeting place and now meet in the cafe at the Hatting Museum on Wellington Road South. Same day, Friday, and same time 10.00-11.30. Stitchers of any kind welcome.

I'd come if I still lived in Manchester, Stockport was only a half hour bus ride away from me. Unfortunately I can't justify the plane fare from Germany

Could the day and time be putting people off do you think? A lot of people may be unable to go even if they want to because of work. I worked shifts so would have been able to go some weeks and not others but for those who work a regular 9-5 job Friday morning isn't a time they can make.

Don't be discouraged. Often these things take a little while to start off. You will never find a time thats convenient for everyone. Sometimes it just takes a little while for the word to spreed. Anyway good for you for trying. :applesauce:
