I'm from Australia and tried needlepoint tapestry a few years but didn't get too far. In those days I was a full-time dad and house-husband and just didn't have the time.
Now my children have left school and I've decided to try my hand at it again. I haven't been able to find a forum solely for needlepoint tapestry but I notice you do have a topic or two on it so here I am. I have also purchased some simple, and a couple of difficult (because I fell in love with the pictures - see below), cross stitch kits as I would like to try that too. I've found my first attempts at cross stitch quite difficult and have had to reach for a magnifying glass a lot (I'm glad a bought one at the same time I bought the kits!).
Anyway, here I am, and I am looking forward to your company and encouragement. I've already enjoyed looking through the forum and seeing some wonderful works-in-progress.

Sorry I can't help with the query about tapestry and its something I tried once and gave it all away to someone who loved it and I kept on with my cross stitching and (in those days) embroidery.

I live in the Blue Mountains.
I bought the "Nature's Paradise" cross stitch kit, designed from the artwork of artist, Thomas Kinkade, on eBay a couple of weeks. Sitting on that veranda with my books, hobbies and pets together with the sound of the running water nearby would be a near perfect life for me.
I know what you mean by stash buying - I have enough CS and tapestry kits and canvases to see out my lifetime yet still have my eyes on more.

I have just started "Scottie":
and I'm finding it quite difficult to get used to it. It's a trammed tapestry canvas where the design is put on the canvas using horizontal wool stitches of different lengths instead of painting or printing it on. It's worked by doing a half cross stitch over the wool lengths. It's definitely not as easy as simply stitching a painted picture. And in this one the various colour shades are very close.
I'm hoping to have it finished to give to a neighbour for Christmas (this year! ).
I see you and I are both 'newbies' to the forum this weekend. It's been a very wet weekend here and would've been ideal for stitching if I wasn't laid low with a very unpleasant stomach flu.

Yes, I'm new here but I like this place from the start:) Here we've got warm and sunny weekend also great for stitching by the lake for example:) That's what I'm going to do today. I have to finish a birth sampler for my brother's-in law daughter. They are coming to Poland in a couple of weeks time, so I have to finish it:)

Hello and welcome! The scottie picture looks interesting to do. I haven't done any tapestry, but I am intrigued by it. Maybe some day.... The Kinkade picture is beautiful! I've done a couple of his patterns and have quite a few in my stash to do, too.

When I first attempted tapestry about 15 years ago it was very popular. We had four or five stores here in the Mountains that sold a full range of tapestry supplies now there are none.
However, I do enjoy the trip down to Mittagong as Victoria House is a great shop and the staff are friendly.
Although to be totally honest, if it wasn't for eBay I don't think I could afford to do either needlepoint or cross stitch.
Love that Scottie one Ron and wish you good luck with doing it - especially the colours so close.
I am finding it much cheaper to get kits from the US, as they seem to be at least half the price and postage is reasonable too. I usually use 1-2-3 stitch or cross stitch world for anything and by using a debit visa, can't get into strife with spending too much - cause if it ain't in the bank I can't have it.
Sad that so many embroidery/stitching shops are closing isn't it.
It's been warm and sunny up here but lots of cloud coming in so hope it rains and rains, need it to fill the rainwater tank for the garden etc.

Yes, I totally agree with that Sally. I notice the same kits are also a lot more expensive from UK eBay sellers.
The US postal service seems quicker now too. Once books from Amazon took up to 6-8 weeks to arrive in Australia. Now I'm getting kits/canvases in 2-3 weeks.
I was lucky to get a bulk buy of 37 Australian BaxterGrafix tapestry canvases - many of them vintage bush and art scenes and no longer available and some of them huge (75cm by 108cm) plus a bag of nearly 400 skeins of wool for $150.00 - on eBay a couple of weeks ago.
I feel sorry for local shops trying to compete - DMC wool at $1.50 a skein when you can get the same at Lincraft stores for $0.79.
However, these days I can't afford to be philanthropic and have to go with the best price.
Another wet & chilly day (and I really didn't want to mow the lawn and clean the gutters ).
