I made a cake. Would you like to see?

Post by mechie »

I'm by no means a great baker, but I did make a butterfly cake for my daughters birthday party. I made it yesterday and the party is this afternoon. I'm kinda proud of how it turned out.

Thanks, everyone!

The party went very well. The kids had a blast and of course, everyone loved the cake. :D It was chocolate with (mostly) vanilla frosting (the black was chocolate because I learned the hard way that it's easier to dye chocolate frosting black than it is to dye white frosting black).

It looks great! Were your hands sore after all the stars?

There's a trick to black and red icing. With black, you want to get it to a very dark gray and let it sit. It will darken as it sits. Also, the more you work with the icing in the bag the darker it will get. With red icing, it helps to use a pink coloring and get it a dark pink before adding your red because red coloring can be bitter. As with the black, you let it sit for a while to darken up.

Just a few tricks I've learned over the last 20 years of decorating. :D

Very much so! I couldn't stitch that night because I couldn't hardly move my hand for the rest of the evening.

Thanks for the tip! I really needed that last year when the kiddo wanted (and got) a ladybug cake. I had a heck of a time getting red and black icing. That's when I found something online about dying the chocolate icing black as opposed to the white icing. The red did end up a bit bitter even using the "no taste" dye from Wiltons. Live and learn I guess. Next time I'll be sure to try your method. :D
