Pincushion my own design COMPLETE! Pic heavy

Post by Lenne »

Hey there,

I've been working on creating my own designs, and I've made a start on stitching one of them up, it's a pincushion and it's more a case of will it work on fabric even though it looks funky on the pattern maker so this is sort of an experiment.

I've made the top bit, will move onto the sides soon but I was really hoping for some feedback- is this something that you'd be interested in making, anything you might recommend I change or try, that sort of thing. If I manage to get everything how I like it and I am pleased with the overall effect when the pincushion is made I am planning on creating other designs focusing around the same design for a biscornu, scissor fob or needlebook that sort of thing just to share on my blog.

Thanks in advance, here are the pictures!

:applesauce: very pretty. And I do like your color choices, though I can picture it in several different varieties too. I can really see this as something I would be interested in eventually. Another reason to be learning those hardanger stitches I keep meaning to do. Especially since I have Mabel's afghan patterns already. Now you have given me another reason. Its fun to do stitches other than cross stitch as much as I love doing them too.

Blimey, lots of lovely comments thanks :D

It's great fun designing- a blank canvas just to go nuts on. Some of the designs I made were so intricate I just couldn't make them work so I've kept them back to try on a larger scale- the lacy effect around the edge might have a fancy speciality stitch name but I call it "no idea what I am doing here but it's fun and kinda looks neat".

I will carry on then and get it done, in various colours and possibly a cross-stitch only version if people aren't so keen on the fancy stitches. Your comments really help boost my confidence, thanks for that :)

Will post a pic when it's done, and give you a shout if you're interested in having a go at it yourself when I've moved it to the new pattern maker (future birthday present)

What i like about the design is that it is versatile, and has a nice variety and combination of stitches, but it hasn't become fussy, it's got nice clean lines. Is it all in stranded cotton? Something you might like to try is using different types of thread, e.g. perle cotton, a thin wool or a metallic braid to add different textures -- mind you, I'm not saying the design needs it, it looks great as it is, but just giving you ideas for future designs to play with :-)

A very interesting design. I think the funny stitch is a form of herringbone (of which there seem to be an almost infinite number of variations). The two-tone effect works well. The satin stitch blocks (Scotch stitch, I presume, it's hard to tell in the light), might catch and pull would be my only concern. But you didn't say what size the fabric is, so I can't tell how big the design is.

Overall, a success!

Thanks again- really awesome to hear you like it! Thanks for all the feedback it's given me such a boost and some great ideas

Yup Mabel- all stranded cotton; I will have to purchase some different types of thread and experiment, thanks for your input it means a lot to me :)

Serinde- herringbone sounds much easier to say than "no idea what I am doing here but it's fun and kinda looks neat" haha! The satin/scotch stitch does feel like it might come out especially as it's going to have a load of needles shoved in it so might have to revise that one and think of something else to pop in that place.

The fabric is 28 count, just over 3x3". Going to have a little play about with my pattern maker to see what I can replace the satin stitches with- can always pop some satin in the sides because they are so much fun to do and there's less chance of a needle catching and pulling the thread free there... possibly.

 Can warm cold hands on my flushing cheeks right now haha! Would be awesome to be a designer maybe one day with lots and lots of practise; thankyou :D

I'm currently juggling this pincushion with View Of a Garden (this one has a deadline of ASAP because I need to frame it and get it to my grandparents before Christmas gulp) but I am aiming to complete both around the same time. In theory....with a dollop of luck :shamrock:

I hate to tell you this :-), but as you have just designed this you are technically already a designer!

I love the colours 8} I chose those colours for my first hardanger project and my teacher thinks I'm insane - she doesn't comprehend a desire for striking colour as opposed to the traditional creams and beiges which, in her words, are so lovely in comparison.

Lenne, you are amazing and what a wonderful experiment yo have created for us to enjoy.

If I wasn't already over loaded with pin cushions, needle holders etc. I would certainly give that one a go.

I agree with Mabel, technically you are a designer already and you have been recognised on here as such.

Great work and very well done.

Its lovely! I personally would call it needlepoint.

The satin stitch blocks are lovely, and would look even more fab in silk perle (money is no object! :D ), but they would be vulnerable on a pincushion. I would make it up as an ornament and hang it on my christmas tree.

Needlepoint (my definition, with all those fancy stitches) is much bigger in the US than the UK. For ideas about how to chart this sort of thing take a look at the ANG, American Needlepoint Guild, website, as a start. And designers like Amybear. I did her Rhapsody in different colours, and silks from Vikki Clayton of hand-dyedfibers.com and it was huge fun! You have the talent, you designer, you. You could be doing the same sort of things.

Woot finished! Finally :)

Might be a bit over the top with the pics here but my phone is pants and I wanted to make sure you could see it all properly to get a good idea. The next one I make will be same colours but less cushion stitch, then I will do the same pattern again with soft colours, then a cross stitch only version on aida. Anyway here we go:

Next time I will use my brain and actually design so all parts touch to save a ton of time stitching. I am so daft sometimes! I'd really love to know what you think, thanks for looking!

Lovely work - even more so when you consider that you designed it yourself :applesauce: :applesauce: . I love anything with a mixture of stitches so would definitely stitch something like this - though probably knowing me in shades of purple!
