Can I ask why you need to grid your fabric

You don't NEED to grid your fabric - a lot of us do as we are working on big designs with a lot of confetti stitching so it helps us not to miscount and place our stitches correctly e.g working on HAEDs! Other stitchers just work in 10x10 blocks so they don't get lost - others just count! I personally grid as I find it helps me to stitch quicker and I am not always second guessing myself and recounting to check my stitches are in the right place - a quick glance at my gridded fabric and chart will tell me.

I see, never done that, I colour the pattern with a pencil so I know what I've already sewn

It's useful when your pattern is complex enough that it's hard to see where you are on your fabric ... it shows up mistakes in counting very quickly too whic means less :anotherfrog:

I use the water soluble ink as well and love the stuff. I use one of those foamy posterboards you get in the school supply section and straight pins to count and mark my lines. Ex. I will count my ten place the pin and then mark a small blue line count from that pin place and mark...then after all the small lines are placed i then do all the big lines.
the poster board also protects the surface you place your fabric on when you write on it...the marker sometimes marks through the holes.

I'm going to try this on my next project as lit's quite big.

Do you put lines in both directions, ie vertical and horizontal, can't see very well from the photo

I use regular cotton sewing thread for gridding. I bought a water soluble pen recently but it wouldn't come out. I was rinsing and rinsing in cold water, I even started to rub.

I put mine both vertical and horizontal. 10x10 that is just me :) I think of each square as a small finish since I am working on such a large project. LOL

i never gridded before learning about it on this forum. but i tried it on my current kit. i kinda like it! :)

i use the disappearing pen, and it does disappear! so i re-grid parts i choose to work on at that sitting. i don't mind because i only stitch 20 - 40 minutes in a session, and in that time i don't do very much. (but by the end of the week alot has been done!!! :) )

i like mags description and picture, and i think i'll give that a try next time. seems simple and effective. thanks, mags :applesauce:
