I've been wanting to complete my set (only half way there though, I need 250 colors) but I've been buying as a kit for a project, and then sometimes I'll buy 20 new colors going down my floss list. That way I also have money for charts. :D

I have a full set and replace as I go but also when DMC thread is on clearance (usually in packs) and on sale (jo anns do it every year for Christmas; but they don't advertise when) I still pick them up. Sometimes just random colors or if my list is with me I'll buy from my list.
I know this is bad...but...with the ecomny a lot of small crafts stores is going out of business and I've picked up a bunch of my threads from when they just shoved them in little baggies and sold them for $2.00.
Also when Walmart was getting rid of their needlepoint section (curse them!) I hit a walmart that had nothing but DMC 646 for only 6 cents. It has been 5 years since then and I still have 4 full bobbins and I think 3 full skeins.
In short if their is a clearance on DMC thread and I have my allowance I will limit myself to no more than $20 sometimes only $10.

When I first started out I used to buy every time I had a chance. Collection was quite big, but not a complete set, every time I started something new I was always missing something, so I decided to by a complete boxed set. I now work from the box, and use the others as backup. When one in the box goes done, I replace it with one from the backup, and then by a new one to replace that one. So I never run out. (hopefully)

I started out buying my floss as and when I needed the colors, we were living in the middle east then and DMC was quite cheap there (not entirely up to US prices but not far off).
But when we moved back to the UK I stopped buying dmc coz it just got too expensive (and buying hand dyed and variegated is so much more fun), not though I've started buying dmc again from Across Town Stitching and I just need another 150 to make my set complete, which i will get as soon as I come back off my holidays on the 14th of Feb :)

So my answer is Yes to full set of DMC

Thank you all for your input on this. I think I'd got too focused on having the full set and now I'm more focused on what I want to stitch!!!

My spreadsheet has undergone a MAJOR rework!!! It now lists my four WIP's, which are HAED Butterfly Wood, SAL Teddy Bear Tree, Bouncing Baby Afghan and the chart Skitzzzz did for me. I have HAED Faery Tales kitted and I also have HAED Curl up with a Good Book which is likely to be the next start after Faery Tales.

I have also added The Sistine Chapel and the 4 Randal Spangler SK's that have just been released and discovered that there are 117 colours in the dmc range that I do not need to do all of that and only need to buy around 60!!!!!!

I also own two other HAED charts, Green Man because it was about to be retired and I knew I'd regret it if i didn't cos i just liked it and the Middle Earth chart. I'm going to add those to my spreadsheet as I usually buy my threads from Across Town Stitching, either 50 or 100 at a time and that way I know I'll use the extras that I'll add to the list!!!

Ok I can't count!!!!

If I want to fully kit up the Sistine chapel and all the sk's its actually 123!!!!!!! where I got 60ish from is anyones guess!!!!!!

If I wanted to kit it up as a separate its 89 colours but 148 skeins.

that being said I am still going to go ahead and purchase the chart. I've sold a few bits on ebay that I no longer need/want so its my little treat to myself!!!!!

Half the fun is in the buying and kitting up. If I already had all the colours I'd feel I was missing out on that fun.

If you're on a budget then it makes more sense to buy what you are definitely going to use rather than getting a bunch of skeins you may or may not use.

Finally I would worry about dye lots and something happening to my collection. From dye lot to dye lot the colour changes - often only insignificantly but add the ravishes of time and the 256 from your stock might look like a completely different shade from the new 256 you had to buy because your project needed two skeins of that colour. I've actually seen this many times with projects that were put away and then pulled out years later to be completed - same colour TOTALLY different to look at. So best to buy what you need at the time. Someone may also misplace, leave in sunlight to fade, get wet, etc etc your stock hence I kit up as I go (don't talk to me about losing the whole kit . . . has happened more than once).

If skeins ar on sale I do buy random colours just because I love them - I use them for sample stitches and random mini projects and colour substituting if I don't like the colour that is proscribed.
