Somehow I've missed all of these replies - thanks everyone
I don't know what you call the stitch to make the flowers. You make two bars then slide the needle underneath the bars and round and round filling up the circle - a bit like a spiral. You can see the bars ready to be filled in the last photo. The floss for this is a boucle so it gives quite a 3D effect. The centres on top of the petals are made using Pistil stitch which is like a french knot on a stem! So yes you do build up the image over several layers so that the whole thing is slightly raised. TBear the blue does wash off but the fabric has become slightly puckered since washing which is disappointing. Hopefully when I stretch it for framing that will not show too much.
I've really enjoyed working on this though as it didn't take too long and the shiny Edmar Iris thread is beautiful to work with. I got another one for my birthday so will have a try at it soon

I've done some embroidery. I like that it's a little more 3D than cross stitch. It is really easy once you pick it up. I had trouble with the boullian (sp) stitch though. I ended up substituting it with another stitch.
Lovely finish and I'm sure stretching will sort out the puckering - my SIL has just finished some Noah's Ark embroideries which ended up with much worse puckering than yours and the framer stretched it brilliantly so you can't see it at all.
Absolutely beautiful, Susan!! There's a stitch similar to the one you used on the flowers on the Castles in the Air special stitch version. Can't remember what it's called though.
