i think you need both hands, alot of tension on the fabric, and fingernails... i don't have fingernails and my hands don't work the way they used to, so i use beads, or skip the effect and decide the picture looks just fine without them.

It took me soooo long to get them to work right, and they still cause me trouble more often than not. Maybe I'll look into beads as well lol

I seldom have fingernails but tension really helps and I think I do an extra wrap. I have pretty good luck.

I sometimes use the easier Colonial Knot instead.

Once the thread is looped around the needle, make sure you hold the thread taut around the needle. I found when doing French knots that if I didn't hold the thread taut it just all came undone. Good luck!
