stitching on an afghan

Post by addicted »

I am hoping to start an afghan for the new baby.
I am wondering how does one secure the stitches at the back so that they don't unravel.
I am only used to stitching pictures, nothing that has its back exposed.
Do I do anything differently?
Thanks.

I'm not doing anything different on the back of mine to what I would do on a normal, to be framed, cross stitch.

Carole (rcperryls) will probably be around shortly and I know she has alot more afghan experience than me.

I'm here. :applesauce: I don't do anything different to secure my stitches on the afghans I think. I do use the loop method for adding new threads when I can. And then secure the thread on the back by weaving it under a few stitches. I might go forward and then back again sometimes, but I don't think it is any different from framed pieces. And I have never had trouble with stitches coming out and my afghans have seen a lot of use and a lot of washing machine time and dryer.

I didn't do anything different with the afghan I stitched either. If you get really worried, it is possible to attach backing fabric to an afghan afterwards, including the iron on self adhesive stuff that you can get for bookmarks.

Emma (destructivernie) is doing a baby afghan and has pictures here if you scroll down the thread a little bit. I think a search on baby afghan will show you some threads. I have pics of a few afghans in my gallery, but I don't have the one baby afghan I did years ago. I hope you find one that you like.
