Storage

Hi all,

I am hoping you can give me some help on storage for my threads.

I have done many small cross stitch kits over the years and have now gathered quite a collection of thread. However, they are all different sizes, colours and amounts (mainly really small amounts so no where near enough to place on bobbins etc.)

I want to be able to split them and label them somehow, but most consist of perhaps 2 or three threads per colour in most instances, but want to keep them as will be handy to have!

Any idea how I can store and label all my remaining thread?

I tend to keep the thread cards with all the threads still attached in a big plastic wallet

You could also put all your ends in freezer/sandwich bags and organise them by colour etc. I know a lot of people do that.

I started stitching when I was 7 and thread was very precious in those day as it was during the 2nd WW. My mother used to dole out my thread in lengths. She just cut a piece of cardboard, cut slots in it and wound the thread round and round through the slots, then wrote the thread number and colour above it. I used that method for years until I discovered the plastic bobbins.

athalie, what a fascinating story! makes me feel guilty for throwing my stuff away...

seriously, i do just throw away the left over floss from kits. skeins are kept on bobbins until they're all used up for projects i've kitted from charts.

That story is heartwarming Athalie, reminding us not to take anything for granted in this life.

As for the question, I keep all my thread in bobbins, but since leftover from kits are not very consistent in amount, size, numbering, I just keep them all together in a small ziploc bag, so I can use for small details on random projects, or to do whip stitching on my fabric, as a cord for fobs, etc.

I just put my unused thread onto the thread cards ( with colour and number written on it if course) then put it in a plastic sleeve with the project picture at the front, then it goes into my file.

The reason I do that is I'm always asked "will you make me one" most the time there's about enough to make 2. So if someone asks me they want something stitched for what ever reason. I just give them the file to pick something then they tell me to remove or add something.

If there not full lengths I do throw them away though. not worth keeping them I don't think. And also a pain to store

I have only done kits so far, but want to keep the remaining threads for when I get a bit more adventurous.

I like your idea Paul on keeping them in individual bags. I can keep the pattern and picture in it too so I know what the colours are and can repeat that pattern if I want!

I think when I move onto bigger projects with larger amounts of thread, the bobbins or cards sound good too!
