Stripping out stabilizing thread?

Post by CayenneCat »

Hello!

I'm working on a design that uses Kreinik "Glow in the Dark" filament thread.

The instructions with the design say to:

" . . . strip out the stabilizing thread. Use the same stripping method as for floss. The filament will be easier to keep flat and untwisted."

I've got no clue on what to do.

Has anyone run across this before or know what the instructions are talking about?

Thank you!

I haven't worked with that particular thread, but here is how to seperate floss. I guess that is what is meant by "strip".

I watched the video, and it mentioned to roll the tip of the floss between your fingers to separate the strands.

I did that with the Kreinik glow in the dark floss, and two really thin strands separated from the thick glow in the dark strand.

I bet those thin strands are the stabilizing thread!

Thank you Offe! :D

Not sure what exactly it is that you need it for.. but.. DMC also makes a glow in the dark thread. Color# E940. I own a skein but haven't used it yet so I have no idea how it is to work with.

I think the thin threads are the filament, that you are supposed to stitch with, and the thick thread is the stabilizer. Do both glow in the dark?

It does mean to pull out the thicker white thread and leave the glowing filament.

The thicker thread is there to stop the filament twisting and losing it's glow coating but in use in a project you don't want white thread showing all you want is the glowy bit so it's designed to pull out the white just before you use it.

You tap the cut end of the thread with your finger and the strands will start to separate, you grab a non glow strand and holding the rest of them loosly between thumb and forefinger you gently pull the non glow strand out. Repeat until all non glow strands are out. Then use the glow strand as normal.

Offe and Mystonique - that makes a lot of sense that the thin threads are the blending filament and the thick thread is the stabilizing thread.

I put the bobbin in front of a light, then went into a dark room. The thick thread glowed in the dark, but I didn't see the thin threads glow. Argh! Now I'm confused . . . :?

I may just stitch with the whole thread . . .

It's been about 5 years since I used the Kreinik  maybe I got it the wrong way around but my memory definitely remembers using the thin plasticy bit.

It finally occurred to me that I should post a picture of what the thread looks like:

Image

There is one thicker thread that does glow in the dark, and two fine threads that don't.

Has anyone worked with kreinik glow in the dark thread before?

I'm probably missing something important, but it's a good job you turned out the light. My vote would be to use the thread that actually does the glowing..
