Scroll Frames

1. I just purchased one and a lap stand. However, there are no instructions. How do I put this together?

2. Been using a hoop for years but another stitcher told me to try the scroll frame because it's tons better. So far I'm not impressed. What are your impressions? Likes? Dislikes?

3. Maybe the particular one I got is not good (Homecrafter, from Joann's)...what brands do you use?

perhaps you can go back to joann's and get instructions. maybe they fell out of the box?

I have not ever been a fan of scroll frames as they only hold the top and bottom so the sides are let loose. For me this does not work at all I like hold on all 4 sides. I also do not have a stand that I have found that will work for me so a scroll is not the answer.

As pattiebellehas said I would go back to Joann's and ask for the proper instructions.

It's hard to explain how to put it together without seeing it, so I would agree with the others that you could ask at Joann's.

When I first switched from a hoop to using a scroll frame I didn't get along with it at all. The tension was all saggy in the middle and I ended up going back to my hoop, which was a shame as I liked the idea of scroll frames. Then someone recommended these: http://www.nordicneedle.com/6934.html" target="_blank. They are fantastic!!! You just clip them to the sides of the fabric and secure the strap round the side arm of the scroll frame and they improve the tension immensely. My only quibble is that the straps were too short for the size of my frame, but I just lengthened them by adding some black velcro and now they're fine.

It might be that a scroll frame just doesn't suit you, but my advice would be to persevere for a little while and try stitch clips before giving up on it completely.

I use hoops and scroll frames and prefer scroll frames.

But you really do need to get a good one. There are lots of crappy ones on the market and they don't hold tension, they scroll unevenly. Once mine are tight, they're tight for the duration - I have no problems with floppy sides or loss of tension while I stitch.

The downside of scroll frames is that they are slightly bulkier, so not as portable and you can't easily interchange the piece you are working on with them. Once it's in the frame, it stays in the frame unless you want to spend some time fiddling.

But it doesn't leave the same marks as a hoop, it stretches the fabric more tightly, it gives you a wider working space with no edges cramping your style, it keeps the fabric nice and creasless.

Once mine are tight, they're tight for the duration - I have no problems with floppy sides or loss of tension while I stitch.

Mine were handmade. I have two antiques made of hardwood I found at an op shop many years ago. One I can't remember where I got it - but it's definitely home made. Look for one that uses wing nuts and either rubber washers or spring washers - never get the ones where the dowel slots in like a peg. There is a brand that comes in a bag that many of my friends say is good ... I'll get the name for you.

I can't get on with a hoop or a frame, I roll the material good side in and just hold it with one hand and sew with the other

No intructions?! Maybe if you google the brand it is you can find some online. I tried a scroll frame once. I wasn't a fan.

Nachstenliebe I know I couldn't believe it! It was in a sealed bag so it couldn't have fallen out. No instruction to be found.

I really want to give it a try because the idea of no creases is really appealing. Guess I just have to keep hunting down the perfect one

I use a scroll frame and would be lost without it!


It depends what type you buy really. Mine cost me £90. I did look around beforehand but it was the best of a bunch.
What I liked about it, is you can move the scroll bars so gives you less sagging on the sides and fits any size project.
