New Papillon SAL

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

Just had an email from Papillon to say they will be starting a new 24-month SAL -- it sounds really good, it's called Around The World In 80 Stitches and is going to use speciality stitches from all over the world.

I haven't even started Castles in the Air yet, or their previous one, How Does Your Garden Grow, for which I did actually get the fabric and all the silks together  but this one sounds like just the thing I'd like to do!

You can read about it in their newsletter corner

Edited
I've just downloaded the materials list, greens and lots of floral colours and metallics and beads, yum!

How exciting - thanks for the heads up Mabel! I wonder if this will be similar to the 12 part "Historic Countries" mystery sampler series they did in GOSM..... :thinks:

Oooh, sounds really interesting. Have got way too much waiting to be done to actually stitch this now, but might sign up and get the parts to do later. :D

Midge, I'm fairly certain I will be doing this one, so there'll be at least two :-)

Stupid questions.

If you don't do this an Aida what would you do it on?

Are the thread colours just a quide, essentially I could pick what I want?

Thanks.

Emma, if you don't use aida you'd use an evenweave -- either a cotton or cotton-mix fabric like Lugana or Jobelan, or a linen fabric. Size-wise, if you like 14ct aida you'd use 28ct evenweave, and for 16ct aida you'd use 32ct evenweave.

But of course if you would like to try evenweave but are put off by it looking so fine, you could always choose a 25ct or 22ct evenweave, or even a 20ct or 18ct -- although of course the end result would be rather bigger.

As for the colours, yes, basically you can choose whatever, although the combination of three greens with floral colours does suggest something flowery, so perhaps best not to choose bright blues or reds instead of the greens :-)

Thanks Mabel.

Will have to consider carefully whether I actually want to sign up for this. I still haven't started the Tree of Stitches, I was going to fit it in my rotation but wasn't expecting to have to fit something in for a friend and my other projects to be screaming quite so loudly!!!!!

We could have a group SAL (if it was allowed)! I must say that although I love trying new things and picking my own threads (thanks to TSS!) when it comes to things released in parts I do tend to save them all up for a bit and then start. I like to have a better idea of the overall piece so that I know I have made the right colour and thread choices. Its the control freak in me - I hate surprises! Really looking forward to this one though..... :D

Ditto Mrs MBK.

I might collect the aida version - which I have done for the last two Papillon SALs

I think the aida version is the only way I'll actually do it.

The main reason I haven't started the Tree of Stitches is that special stitches that I know will take more concentration than I have right now.

Mrs MBK, likewise -- I collected all the bits of Garden and Castles to see what the thing would be like first :-). But I may just take the plunge on this one and force myself to be surprised!

I tried to log in (I am subscribed and got the newsletter) but it wouldn't let me. Hope it is a temporary glitch. I haven't done any of their designs, but thought I would take a peek. I really enjoyed doing the TOS and thought this might be a good way to learn about silks as well as some new stitches. I gather this is a purchased design? Is there a deadline? Even if I don't do it, I hope that those of you do will post progress updates.

Oh brilliant Mabel, I'm glad I'll have company on the 2 year trip around the world.

I'm sure Rose will let us have a thread to show our stitched up parts, we did with Castles and all posted in the same thread to keep it simple and easy to find.

Carole, according to Yvonne's email whenever they send a newsletter the website starts acting funny for a little while. It will get better soon.

Yes it is a paid design, but it's only 2 euros :)
You can buy in at the beginning or during the SAL, there is no strict deadline. It will remain available on the site until the next SAL, but that won't be for several months.

If you are interested in Castle in the Air, now is the time to go get it, because it will be taken down as soon as the new SAL is uploaded.

I did get in to the website and it sounds like fun. I think this is something that would be good to add in to the rotation too as a break from all those HAEDs. I hope that we are allowed to do an SAL here also. I downloaded the material list but haven't really looked at it. I will appreciate any and all advice on what type of thread and materials to get as this gets closer as I really am a novice in these areas.
