Maia Fractional Stitches

Post by RobynL »

Hi everyone,

I was so pleased to find this forum, none of my friends are into cross stitching so it'll be great to share my progress with someone!

I'm in the middle of a Maia project (Naima) that I started last year (I had a baby in October, hence the delay). I'm a bit confused about the fractional stitches. When doing the full stitches I was able to do the three quarter stitches no problem. Then I started the background which uses half stitches. In the background there are three quarter stitches indicated and I'm not sure if that means I must do a quarter stitch or a three quarter stitch (hope that makes sense). I eventually emailed maia this evening but was hoping someone would be able to help me this evening because it's driving me nuts trying to work it out!

Thanks so much!

Robyn.

 Hello Robyn. Welcome to the forum from South Carolina. I don't quite understand what your confusion is, but that may be because I have not done any of the Maia designs. We do have members who have, I am sure, and they may know what you mean. If the chart looks like a 3/4 stitch, I would think that is what it is. Could it be a 1/4 stitch and a Back Stitch? I don't know. But I hope you will stay as we would love to see what you are doing and how you are progressing. Be warned that we enable you to do more and gather more stash, but we understand how hard it is with a new baby. Congratulations.

Hi Carole, thanks for reply, very exciting to be getting back into it now!
The maia stitches are different to the dmc ones I've done before, Eg. The three quarter stitches are a half stitch with a quarter stitch over it, rather than the other way around. I'm just getting confused when they show two symbols in one square when you're doing half stitches. Is it two quarter stitches or two three quarter stitches?
I've just read that back and it sounds very confusing! Hope someone can make out what I mean
Anyway, thanks for the welcome, I'll definitely be logging on to get some inspiration!
Robyn.

Hi Robyn and Welcome from Brisbane Australia where it is a glorious autumn morning and I am itching to get outside and stitch before that wind gets up.

Sorry I can't help with you dilemma about the stitches and their symbols but hopefully Maia can send you an answer very soon.
Congratulations on your new baby - they are so gorgeous but oh they do take up a lot of time each day. Enjoy him/her now - they grow up all too soon.

Hi Robyn
I've finished a Maia design and currently doing another. My understanding is that where there is 2 symbols in a square it means to do a 3/4 stitch and a 1/4 stitch using the two colours. Look at that square in relation to the whole design and decide which of the 2 colours is the most prominent in that square, that colour will make up the 3 quarter stitch. The other colour, the less prominent, use the quarter stitch. I hope that makes sense!

Beautiful design you are stitching there! I have never stitched a Maia (love the designs - just hate kits!) but if the background is made up of half stitches and you have 2 symbols in one square I would take that to mean 2 quarter stitches (making one half stitch) which would fit in with the surrounding background half stitches. Unless of course they are adding texture to the background by dotting the odd full cross around (made up of a quarter and three quarter stitch). At the end of the day if you get no reply from Maia go with what you think looks best - no one else will know the difference when they are looking at your beautiful stitching!

I've done a Maia kit and found it the most confusing design ever, I got in a temper everytime I stitched and and said never again.

Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate your input. I got an email back from Maia with a very detailed explanation of the various ways I could stitch them so I'm back on track! Very excited to get closer to finishing.
Anyway, have a good evening!
Robyn.
