28-ct Jobelyn vs 28-ct Monaco

Post by karenstitches »

I've just started using fabrics other than aida with my xstitch projects, and so far my favorite is Monaco. But I have a project going on 28-ct Jobelyn and another I'm finishing on 28-ct Monaco. I was wondering if there were any known advantages/disadvantages to either type of fabric, or a reason one is better than the other? Thx.

Monaco is made by Charles Craft and is 100% cotton and Jobelyn is made by Permin and is a cotton/modal fibre mix, I believe. There might be a bit of difference between the handle and the number of colours it come in.

The same distinction is very like that between DMC and Anchor: both do the job perfectly well.

if Monaco is 100% cotton then it is likely to be a bit stiffer than Jobelan, which is extremely smooth and pliable -- it drapes beautifully, but some people find it too slippery, and it frays quite easily too. So it depends on your preferences and also what it will be used for.

Thanks. I've noticed the stiffness difference and the fact that Jobelyn frays more easily, but in my hands, Jobelyn feels like a higher quality product.

What does it mean exactly that jobelan is "slippery"? I started a new HAED yesterday on jobelan (it was all my LNS store had in 28ct that was large enough so I figured I'd go with it!). I'm working 1 over 1, and I have noticed that the holes become closer together when I stitch the hole next to it, if that makes sense. It's somewhat difficult to find the holes.
I'm not super thrilled with the coverage I'm getting, but it's all dark colors on white fabric.

"slippery" wasn't really a good word -- I think the fabric is mercerised, which gives it a shine and also makes the threads very smooth. This means they move a bit more than on a stiffer fabric; it's why I wouldn't generally stitch over 1 on it, because the working threads slip under the fabric threads more easily. It would also explain why the holes become "smaller" as you stitch near them, the stitches push the fabric threads out of the way. Hope that makes sense?!?

I like cotton fabrics...so followed the Monaco Trail and found this supplier...

http://www.stitcher.co.uk/" target="_blank.

They do Monaco Fabric. It's not listed in their headings but I put 228count Monaco in their search engines and Voila!!

The next step of course.... was to order some!!

First time I've tried them, but their postage is really good! :D

I think "slippery" is a good word to describe Jobalen. But I do have a note: The jobalen I was using for one project, which I abandoned and restarted on aida, feels different than a white jobalen I'm doing another project on (same count). Maybe the manufacturer is different. I could stitch all day on the white jobalen. Sigh. I guess it's all trial and error!

Interesting! I've just done about 100 stitches so far so I'm still trying to decide if I like my jobelan fabric, it's either white or off white, I cant remember right now. :)
