Hi

Post by Kitten9824 »

This is my first time here, but I have been doing cross stitch for years. I was thinking of making a little extra money by selling my cross stitch, but I do not know the rules for selling the projects. Can I sell a cross stitch that I brought in a store by kit or pattern, or do they need to be something that I designed myself. Thank you all for you help.

Hi, and welcome.

I think if you have bought it, and then stitched it yourself you can sell it. What you cannot do is reproduce the design and repackage it and sell the design. I'm sure I remember long discussions on this forum concerning copywrite! Have a look around.

Found it! In this General section, look up page 5 (a very early thread): it's called something like Copyright of Cross Stitch Patterns and has some very helpful URLs (which might still be active, who knows! )

Thanks for your reply. I have read the topic. Am I understanding it correctly, I am allowed to sell the projects a make as long as I don't make more than 5 projects from a company a year.

Sounds about right.
Have you thought about commission work? For example, advertising to stitch for someone a piece that they have chosen. That way you get the fun of stitching and they get the fun of choosing (and buying...). Just a thought. :!:

If you have a local craft store with a bulletine board you could ask to put up a 8X10 Poster with information and advertise that way also at local churches, library, or places like that. If there are any craftfairs in your area that is a good place to advertise and also show your work. Also you could take an add in the newspaper but those tend to be expensive.

I would be careful though as trying to make money by stitching is not very lucrative. You can't charge by the hour unless it is very cheap. and some projects with lots of color change really can slow you down. If you can make a go of it good luck but don't under charge.
If you are looking for some one to help change you, look in the mirror

And I'm sure there's a thread on this site about how much to charge for your stitching, too!

i stitch and sell alot..but never the charts..just the completed piece. I also make sure it's not marked that the completed stitched piece cannot be sold...as is the case for alot of precious moments things..it states under the chart that it can't be sold finished.
I usually stick with smaller things like cards..that don't take alot of time..seems to not get the money it's worth..unless someone special orders something like a birth announcement or for a wedding..good luck!
