Storing Silk

Post by kristinsaty »

I am getting ready to start my first Chatelaine and I am terrified of it. What is keeping me hung up on it is that I have only ever worked with DMC which I store on bobbins. The silks in the kit are very pretty and look so wonderful all twisted up and on their cards. I feel like it would be a shame to bobbinate them. How do you store your silks while they are waiting to be used? How do you store the extra after you get done stitching with it?

I love using silks, and they do look pretty as they come, don't they? But I'm a confirmed bobbinator who bobbins everything that can be bobbined, including silks. I have a whole box full of various types, all on bobbins like my DMC, and so far I've had no problems with any of them.

For thread storage for my Chatelaines I bobbinate the DMC as usual but aways keep the speciality threads in floss a way bags on a ring. Like you I don't have the heart to bobbinate them because I love seeing them in all their glory! What Chatelaine are you planning on starting (I am a bit of an addict!)?

I started off with storing my silks on LoRan project cards, but I've switched to the floss-away bags that Mrs Milkybar Kid mentioned.

Since many of the silks are varigated, I didn't want to cut them ahead of time, but as I needed them.

The silks are pretty sturdy.

Which Chatelaine are you planning to stitch?

Thanks for the suggestions. I think that I will try floss away bags. The baby seems to think that my things are fair game for teething but I think we can make it work :). I'm stitching Hortus Viriadarium. I am really anxious to start but I have to wait until Tuesday. My youngest and oldest kids have their birthdays a week apart and since they are turning 1 and 5 we decided to throw a party for them. The only problem is that my dh and I underestimated the vast number of people in our families and they are all coming. That and my in-laws are staying until late Monday night. So as a reward for making it through the weekend I get a new start. I will post pictures after I get the first part done. I am also going to try to sal my other wips, but there are quite a few.

In a nice way you just made me laugh so hard ... I was imagining Daleks attacking silk threads BOBBINATE BOBBINATE lol

I always found it quite difficult to wind silks (as they slip undone) and generally leave them how they come but in a plastic baggy.

Okay I had to laugh as well and then had to say "we are the bobbinators, we'll be back" out loud and of course cracked up even more and scared my cat. @rotfl:

I think the Floss Away bags are a fabulous idea. I was having the same reservations as kristensaty. Having never used silks before, I was totally aghast at the thought of bobbinating these beauties. Perhaps with time, I'll get over it  but for now, it's off to Jo-Anns for the bags.
