Post by megan_bright »

So I want to learn to tat. I bought a book with a DVD, but that only goes so far. Any tips or ideas for a beginner??
Thanks!

No tips, but I've been considering getting into it. I think it could be quite fun and add some nice touches to finishing off some of my cross stitch projects. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for any good tips.

My great aunt used to tat all the time. I was too young at the time to really be interested in it, but I've always wished I had asked to learn how to do it before she passed away. If you ever find any good resources on how to do it, please share!

Sorry cant help either but this is something that I have been really wanting to get in to. There's a tatting for beginners book at the hobby lobby I go to. I keep eyeing and one of these days I'm sure I'm gonna break down and buy it. Are you doing shuttle tatting or needle tatting? I've heard needle tattling is easier.

The book I got was from hobby lobby actually. It's called Learn to tat by Janette Baker, and it is shuttle tatting. I haven't watched the DVD yet, but I'm hoping it will be helpful. If it is I'll let you know :) if I can do it well it would be great for Christmas gifts I think :)

My mum used to do tatting and made some lovely pieces but my main memory of it is sittting in the lounge, in front of the fire with the noise of the tatting bobbin as she did it. It was a very relaxing sound. Never actually tried it myself.

Having done quite a lot of crochet in my time, I couldn't get on with shuttle tatting as it seemed to me to be the complete opposite of crochet and I couldn't get my head round it
I am however interested in needle tatting and have found a few websites that look interesting but I haven't yet started.

I used to crochet all the time before I discovered cross stitching. I always thought tatting would be interesting to learn. I even got some tatting materials once, but lost them in a move. I'm interested in how you find it, so be sure to report back here with the results and pictures, please.
