storage

Post by gillian05 »

How do you all store your cross stitch patterns books aida threads kits etc etc. I have a cupboard in the living room and I'm going to use it for all my cross stitch stuff. What way is best to store it? Shelves, boxes, drawers or someone have any other ideas. Right now I have stuff in every room lol x

I have most of my stuff in a Subway bread dough box (perfect size...and from the days when my brother worked at Subway lol). The box goes up in the closet, so most of my UFOs and used/old patterns go up there. The stuff that I will soon be working on (such as Christmas presents for the year) or am currently working on goes in a dresser drawer. My threads currently don't have a spot, as they were all just given to me by a friend...3 boxes of them...so I'll probably have to empty another drawer.

My threads, beads, magazines and quilting info all go on the bottom shelf of one of my bookcases. My hoops, frames and other misc stuff go into a Really Useful Box (one of the long thin ones, slightly wider than a sheet of A4 paper). All my kits go in another one and these both sit in front of the book case.

My charts that I am probably not going to do (but were given to me by my grandma so I can't get rid of them.....yet) and my finished cross stitches, fabric, wadding etc etc go in a box under my bed.

I have individual boxes with my odds and ends in. One has reels of cotton, one has highlighters, another has needles and glue etc.

Finally the piece that I am working on gets stored on its frame, inside of a pillow case and the chart and threads get stored in another more decorative box that sits in front of my book case while not in use

I've got a large black storage box I got from Ikea that I store all of my stitching stuff in on a bookcase in my living room. So far, it is large enough, though most of my patterns are PDFs so they don't take up any space.

I have converted a small clothes closet to my storage a few years back. I took the hanging rod out and installed shelves. I have threads in the DMC boxes on one shelf, all my mags and books are in those stand up magazine holders with a removable top. Charts, pamplets etc are in a plastic file box. I keep material in the another plastic bids. Hoops, frames etc in a small tote. These all are on the shelves. Large stands are in a large tote on the floor. All small items, Needles, highlighters etc are stored in a plastic school pencil box. And I also have the thread that is on bobbins in the plastic craft storage boxes.

Before I converted the closet. I used those rolling clothes plastic bins that roll under the bed. They worked for many of years, they are about 4 ft long and opened on top on both ends. Inside there I used the plastic shoe boxes to store my thread and material.

I use those nice shoe boxes from Michaels for specialty floss..I guess I am weird but I have little boxes from the dollar store for each of my big projects and keep them in plastic bags inside the big totes..I use an old filing cabinet for my patterns and try to keep the same designers together.I have a big basement and it is so full I think it is time to unload some stuff.

I have one of those storage ottomans that I got from Hobby Lobby. Inside it I have all my felt, magazines, pattern books, floss boxes, a small box for all my beads, a small plastic tub for all my small odds and ends. Wedged between my armchair and the piano I have a I've got a big tote bag with all my fabric. On the opposite side of my armchair I've got a big zippered tote with all my kits, polyfill, and other odds and ends that won't fit neatly into the storage ottoman. Then I have three tote bags I got from Bath and Body Works that I use to store my WIPs and hoops in, one for each of my three main ones, though I am using the one with my blackwork project threads for my dragon project as well. All my pens, pencils, highlighters, sharpies, stiletto, tatting needles and magnetic wand are stored in an Avengers mini pail that I got at Target. Scissors and needles are stored in a square pail that I got from Target and those sit on the tray table with a bunch of other stuff I like having nearby.

WOW. I started to think of the different places that I have things stored. I have a wooden 2 drawer file cabinet that holds my charts/design booklets sorted by subject or theme. I have a cabinet with 2 shelves, the bottom one holds extra hoops/afghans to be stitched/and assorted fabrics that I don't think I will be using in the near or even distant future but I often surprise myself. Those are both in the computer room. I have 3 plastic
rolling carts (?) that have 3 large drawers each. One keeps current projects in, one keeps projects that are active but not up in my rotation (these are all interchangeable drawers so when a project comes up for stitching, I can just move the drawers. The third is for projects in waiting. Also have some extra hoops/q-snaps. For my extra threads(duplicates in floss bags) and bobbinated thread not being used by a WIP and extra bobbin containers there is a cabinet in my kitchen hutch which holds these. And finally I have a lovely tiered sewing basket that my husband gave me for Christmas one year that sits right behind me and holds extra needles, threaders and other stitchy things. Oh, and another sewing basket my son gave me which holds all my krenik and other metalic threads. I have shocked myself with all of this. I never wrote it down before and it isn't as complicated as it sounds. Works for me and has kind of grown over the years. Good thing so many charts I do now are pdf's. Easy storage until I print.

I use those fold up shopping bags to store kits in. I use A4 2 ring lever arch binders to store my patterns and threads (threads on Stitchbows and patterns in plastic sleeves).

I use plastic storage boxes. I have one big and flat, meant to fit under a bed, that has all my kits in it. Another larger, regular bin for books and leaflets. A small box (a little larger than a shoe box size) for all my magazines (I don't many). I have another large box for fabrics. And another medium sized box for all me to store all my floss boxes and patterns for the currect projects. (I have another 4-5 plastic tubs full of yarn and things for my crochet habit.)

My charts are in plastic sleeves in ring binders, though I need to get some more binders... :D

My DMC is currently in bags in my sewing table, though it takes up all the room in the sewing table.

Perle threads are on bobbins in a plastic box down the side of the sofa, along with my sewing box which has my needles, pins, thread heaven, random threads which weren't identified in kits etc.

Then I have plastic bags containing my WIPS and on a shelf in a separate cupboard, I have the fabric and padding from my 12 days ornaments and my metal board and magnets for charts where this works to hold a page.

I need to move house - I need a stitching room

Next to my chair, I have this little guy that I found at JoAnns. Found it in the sewing/ quilting area.
Image
Its not very big, but wide enough to fit patterns, grid paper, book of specialty stitches. In the pockets, I have extra scissors, fray stop, a few pencils and highlighters.. not much really.

But my real storage- patterns, fabric, threads, etc.. is all in a drawer of a 4 drawer file cabinet. My thread binder doesn't fit in the drawer so thats on top of the cabinet. Right now, I have quite a bit on the floor in front of the cabinet- only because its easier to throw it there then to open the drawer and put it away properly. I really need to spend time putting things back together- and get it off the floor.

I'm like Rose, with a hobby/comp room.
It was our oldest daughter's bedroom.
The closet hubby converted it into a 3 shelved nick nack closet to hold the 39 yrs of figurines, along with 7 shelves on 2 adjacent walls beside the closet.
In closet, I have 2 of those cloth meshed laundry bags that holds my framing paper and gift wrap. I also have a mid-size luggage tote that holds pic. frames, that are CAREFULLY packed in Wal-Mart sacks.
The wall with closet has a decorative trash can that holds my REUSABLE fabric tubes for my latest projects for the yr., with name, address, if needed, project COPIED pattern and threads for patterns. After I get done with the project, they get transferred, in the tubes with info, to a cloth tote, the kind that new stores give out, to be taken to kitchen when I get ready for framing in mid-Dec.
Beside the cloth tote, is my bead collection in a 24 drawer container sitting on floor. Next to it is 7 drawer/wheeled cart that holds my pre-cut fabric and misc. items.
The front wall of the house, has another 7 drawer/wheeled cart that hold my binders of threads. And on top of it is 7 MORE small containers, all in cloth totes, of EXTRA threads.
The next wall has our daughter's toy chest that her dad made when she was a baby, and it holds, in office binders, my patterns, by category, that I am not using at the time. EXTRA pic. frames. On top of the toy chest is a plastic bin that holds my framing supplies, tools, and in office bins, the patterns that are used MOSTLY, and EXTRA fabric that are in tubes.
My hobby store has pre-cut and I buy from Wal-Mart and ANOTHER hobby store the tube fabrics.
I ALSO, on comp., update my INVENTORY of supplies as needed.

I have a beautiful wooden box that was made by a friend of my husband's as a wedding present for us. It's about 2 foot cubed and has an upholstered top so it can double as a seat. I'm not quite sure how, but I ended commandeering it for my stitchy things and it's perfect.

What is working for me right now, because it changes every year or so, I have index cards with DMC numbers on them. Placed in to snack baggie size and the corresponding floss in each. My 12yo keeps them in numerical order and they are stored in ramen boxes. LOL!!!! Perfect size though. All of my charts, leaflets are stored in a drawer in the study. All of my WIPs, fabric and extra qsnaps are stored in a plastic storage box up at the top of my closet.
I sound pretty redneck I am sure but I have to do what works for me at the moment. My next switcheroo will hopefully include matching Thirty-One totes. Big wishes, I know.
