Am I missing something? Book prices . . .

Post by Wandatoo »

I just visited eBay and was shocked at some of the prices for cross stitch books. For example, one copy of Joan Elliott's "A Woman's World in Cross Stitch" was listed for more than $80. Then I decided to check Amazon and found the same book for $336 and another copy for $362 !

I have this and many other cross stitch books -- do I own a treasure trove ? ? I certainly didn't pay anywhere near that -- like $15 or $20. Even if they're OOP, are they that scarce and valuable now? :thinks:

I don't e-bay anymore but the last time I was on Amazon.com (looking for some of the required reading for my 11th grader) I noticed a book for an exorbitant amount (something like a paperback copy of "The Grapes of Wrath" for like $295) I thought it was a blip.

eta: this was about 2 1/2 weeks ago. (& I didn't buy the expensive one!)

I think you are absolutely right on this, I've seen it on many occasions, and not only with books but cds, and quite a few other things--I just don't get it at all

maybe they are just hoping someone will actually buy it for that price? They'd make a good profit that way, I guess. :-)

When I was raving about the Yvette Stanton Hardanger book, I looked it up on Amazon to copy the link here. The version I had was from 2002 and was crazy priced- somewhere around $200. Her updated version from 2007 was normal $20-30. Same content, same instructions- just a different cover.
I would never spend $200 on a stitchy book- unless the author was included and would pop outta the book whenever I had a question or got myself stuck, or I just needed a second pair of eyes to tell me I am in the right spot. Unless thats the case, I'll save the $200 and spend it on other stash.

Most of the cross stitch books I've seen on Amazon have been really cheap like $1-5 used. Can't say I've seen any of those ridiculous prices.

I'm always distressed at the cost of out of print books. Because people who have them do seem to assume that they can charge ridiculous pricing because they are not available in book shops anymore and it doesn't matter if it's hard to get or not. :faint:

Both the Nancy Spies books I bought last year were stupid prices online, so I sent her an email ... both books arrived on my doorstep plus postage at their cover prices. Wonderful.
