I have some packages of needles which I bought years ago and I don't know how to compare them in size to 22 or 24 or 26 or 28 sized needles. Some are Susand Bates size 5/10 , some are DMC size 3 -9 or 5-10. I know I've used some of them but mostly in a pretty haphazard way when I didn't think about needle size other than if the number of strands I was using could go through the eye. I now use sizes I understand, but if anyone knows the comparison or the differences I would love to know. I tried "googling" but haven't really found an answer so thought someone on this forum was bound to know the answer.

Thank you both. I did find the website that you linked to, Ron, bot my question isn't what needle size for what size fabric count, it's where do these 3-9 and 5-10sizes fit in with the sizes I'm more familiar with. Mag's link makes me think that size 1-10 needles are sharper than the 24,26, or 28 sizes I usually use. Though, I still bleed if I prick my finger with all the needles. Both are good websites and I thank you and have bookmarked them.

Your needles are crewel or embroidery needles (or perhaps patchwork). They will be sharp and generally have a finer eye than the needles most of use here (the 22 through 26's) which are tapestry needles (blunt and larger eye).
I can't help with the size comparison I'm afraid. I don't get along with the sharp needles so I avoid them.
