Scroll Frame

Post by MnLtWspr »

I've had experience using hoops but i would like to use scroll frames. Unfortunately I don't know much about them and can't seem to find exact answers to my questions on google and stuff. I know they comes in different sizes and there are also adjustable ones but can any size of project work in a scroll frame? I'm worried some of the ones I do might be too small. How do I know what size of scroll frame to buy using the size of my aida fabric? Is there such a thing as one size fits all for scroll frames? and if there is, can i find it easy in a lap stand form? Sorry for all the questions

I use scroll frames for most of my projects - the ones I use can be seen here and I use them in conjunction with my Lowery Stand - sorry I've never used a lap stand. The largest frame I have is 30 inches wide and I have 1 project where the fabric is slightly larger so I just roll the edges of the fabric under to make it fit. With scroll frames you have to consider the width of the fabric you are working on - as the length is getting wound around the bars at the top. If you are stitching projects of a similar width fabric - then one size fits all would work. I have a few different size frames - one for my HAEDs and one for my Chatelaines (which are always the largest pieces I work on) and I like the fact that I can see the whole area of the design as I stitch and that once the fabric is is the frame I only need to scroll up and down and not unclip and move around as you would with a hoop or Qsnap (depending on size!).

It's all personal preference, hoop/Qsnap/frame - it just might take some time to find the combination that works for you!

Mrs MBK has just about covered it. I use different size scroll frames and Q-snaps as well. I also have a lap stand and like it for small to medium size projects. For very large projects, I just hold the frame.

Here's a link to see the lap stand I use. The one disadvantage of this one is the velcro system of attaching the fabric to the frame (you need to buy velcro tape) , so I have also used it to hold Q-snaps instead.

The other thing to consider is where you stitch. I have a floor stand which I bought many years ago, but have hardly used. The stand will not fit between my sofa and coffee table!

And by the way, never apologize for asking questions. We love to give advice!

Before you spend the money on a scroll frame there is one thing about them that you should be aware of, the fabric is only held on the top and bottom the sides are left loose. If you are a stitcher that requires a tight hold all the way around and like your fabric to stay tight while stitching then this is not the accessory for you. I bought one years ago and worked with it for a very short time because no matter what I did the fabric would not stay tight the way I need it to. They have come up with a product that you can attach to the sides of the frame and it is suppose to help with the tension. Some love them and some don't but just be aware that this is one drawback of this particular item.

Thank you everybody! I have a low budget but I found one that I hope works. It's the Edmunds Adjustable Split Rail Scroll Frame for like $30. Does anyone use this? I saw good reviews on Amazon. I was so lost about how they were used and how you figure the sizing until Mrs Milkybar Kid mentioned its the width you gotta look for. The ones I like aren't all that wide and I figure if i have a project that's too small for the frame, I'll just use the hoop.
