Another HAED?

Post by mimers »

So, I am working on the Hermit- I have SAL here somewhere. I recently had a look at the HAED website and found an adorable design that looks exactly like the other cat I have. Am I totally crazy for wanting to get it??? I have always been a work-on-one-project-until-its-done but now I'm so tempted!! I'm crazy, right??

For those that do have two HAED on the go, how on earth do you keep your projects stored?? Right now, the Hermit is in a canvas back on the Qsnap. All my floss is in little individual baggies on a ring. There has to be a better way to organize if I have more than one HAED right??

OH, here is the one I'm considering:

And here is my other cat, Fizzy.

It's a match made in heaven right?

:D yes. I have that chart also as it is a perfect likeness to one of my now gone to the Bridge pets named Pippen. I don't know when I will manage to get to it, so I hope you will get it and start soon so I can at least vicariously enjoy it being stitched. I would try to explain my system for keeping things straight but it is really convoluted. I have seperate bobbin boxes for the threads that I am using for each project. I keep a spreadsheet which lets me know which colors are with which project since I move the bobbins around. The chart and the fabric are in a large plastic bag when not on my q-snaps. Its a little annoying when I start stitching on a project because as I stitch I may have to stop and get the thread from another bobbin box, but not always and while some colors may be used in a lot of charts, some are only for one. It all kind of evolved as I went from working on 1 project to 2 and then to too many at one time so it isn't as if this was something I thought about and then put into place. I'm sure there are others who have much better systems. Mine works for me, but like I said it developed rather slowly. Hope this makes some sense.

Thanks for the reply, Carole. Those bobbins you speak of. Do you have to wind the skeins of thead to use a bobbin?? Seems like such a tedious task!

I have been doing this so long I guess that I pretty much have all the DMC threads bobbinated so only have to get a skein on a bobbin when I am replacing one which has been used. It's a bit tedious at first. Others use stitchbows or other systems that they like better. Try different methods and see what works best for you.
This thread How do you organize your floss has lots of different systems that members use.

For a big project I keep my skeins in plastic box

I punch some holes in a piece of cardboard as a floss holder

Mark symbols and silk numbers

Then take one colour at a time pull off about a metre Use what I need to of 1st colour with remaining on card and skien in box

Then do 2nd colour I need to use

Then 3rd

So slowly you are carding the silks up

hope you understand its my method and suits me

All my skeins are kept in plastic boxes prefer that way then I can measure if I have enough of a colour to do the amount of stitches required

I have (had) everything on bobbins. If I need to make more bobbins up I usually do it while watching tv. I have several storing methods. I use the binder system for my basic DMC collection. Then I have three storage boxes with the bobbins I need for no more than two projects and the three keeps all my partially used bobbins. I also have two small sewing toolboxes I keep all my extra skeins of un-bobbin threads, specialty threads, and various notions.
From there I have a to keep my main project on my scroll frame and my box of bobbins in a tote bag and for projects that are kitted up but not done I have in large ziplock bags inside a container.

I love reading how others store their floss. May I ask if you can provide some photographs? I'm having a hard time imagining what these bobbins look like in binders. I am not at home right now so can't post a photo of how I organize floss, but I will tomorrow. In the meantime, would love to see some photos.

Thanks again!

I'm a stitchbow girl - I hate the kinks I get from bobbins and all that winding ugh ughhhh.

So I usually put all the stitchbows for one project in one ring binder along with the pattern.

I keep spares (left over thread and pretty pretty ones I bought for no reason) in another binder.

See here for a picture of stitchbows and the reason I avoid bobbins:

Thanks for showing me how you organize your floss! I need to get a picture taken to demonstrate my own method, which I am not sure I am completely happy with. Sigh ...

One of the things I have learned- one is never completely happy with the way they manage their floss. It seems to be one of those things thats always in flux. And it takes a while to figure out what works for you, and the type of projects you work on.
You get it figured out.. then something changes, or something new comes out, or a company changes something .. just enough.. so what used to fit no longer does, or the types of projects you work on changes so you need to handle more or less thread.... and, then, well, a new method is in order!
