Investing in Entire Floss Collection?

Post by karenstitches »

So, apparently I'm Deeply Invested in cross-stitch even though I've been doing it for only 2 years because I'm considering buying the entire DMC collection (cost = $180). My reason is really convenience. We live in a small town 30 minutes from anywhere, and if I want to start a project between my trips to the city, I usually don't have the floss I need on hand. So my questions are:
  • Is the investment worth it?
  • If I use the Stitchbow/binder storage method, is there a way to buy lots of bows and inserts at once?
Thanks!

I have at least one of the 454 DMC basic colours (and usually a second one as backup). I got a kickstart when a local store went out of business and purchased all they had: $100 for about 500 skeins. Shortly after that I decided to purchase enough to cover every colour. Same reason - no local shop. At the time I wasn't purchasing much online and still find DMC getting more expensive. Michaels used to have 3 for $1.00 sales once in a while, but not any more. At $180 for 454 colours, that works out to about 39 cents, so probably a good deal based on the costs I've seen online.

Can't help with Stitchbow, as I don't use them.

I think it's an excellent thing to do. If I could afford to buy all of them at once then I definitely would. I have no shop near me that sells cross stitch supplies so I have to order everything online. I say bite the bullet and get the whole set and then you only need to replace the colours as you use them up. Just my two cents worth.

I did this a few years ago and I am so happy that I did. I never have less then one skein in my possession and that means I can start any project at anytime. The price seems good. When I bought mine I got free shipping so that was excellant. Sorry can't help on the stitching bows I am a bobbin girl.

Several years ago I decided to finish up my DMC stash by getting all the colors I was missing. Maybe longer ago, because Walmart was still selling floss at a very reasonable price. Now I always have at least one skein of every color and for quite a few I have two. I am so glad that I did that. I use the X Stitcher app to keep track and when I have to bobbinate one, I add it to the shopping list for replacement. That way when I next go into Michaels and now Hobby Lobby (yay!) I always have my list with me. I'm also a bobbin girl so I don't know anything about stitching bows, either.
