2 over 1?
I read the glossary but this term is still not making sense to me. From how I understood it in the glossary it's two pieces of floss over one square. Isn't this how cross stitch is normally done?

Re: 2 over 1?
Yes and no.
If on aida, yes. It's typically 2 threads over one block. Although sometimes for added texture, or to get better coverage, it can be more or fewer thread.
If stitching on linen/ evenweave fabric, it can be 1 over 1, 2 over 1, 2 over 2... All sorts of different combinations.

Re: 2 over 1?
The number of strands of floss can vary depending on fabric count or method.
For example: On 25 ct fabric, if working over one thread, and doing full crosses most people use one strand of floss (although there are a few brave souls that do use two).
If using the tent stitch on 25 ct most seem to use two strands.
On 28 ct, strands vary according to method, one strand might be used for full crosses, but two strands might be used for tenting.
Much depends on personal preference. Testing is always a good idea. Try out stitches on scraps of different fabrics. You'll find the method, fabric, and number of strands that work best for you. Remember stitching is often a long journey and you really want to enjoy the scenery as you go. Hope this helps a little. Don't be afraid to ask about anything you don't understand. This board is full of nice people who never mind sharing their knowledge.

Sorry Maggie, we must have been answering at the same time. Your answer was much more understandable and succinct.

Nah.. both answers work.
Someone throws out a question, we all have a response.

No the more the better! I've never really graduated from AIDA and just grabbed needles having no idea you needed different ones. My next work is going to be 18 count and then I want to try linen so this is great.
Is renting half stitch? I can't see the illustrations in the glossary.

Re: 2 over 1?
Again, I'll say sort of.
It looks like a half stitch from the front, but it's different on the back.
I tent stitch when stitching over 1 on evenweaves.
Typically, when you do a half stitch, on the back it looks like a series of ||||||
On the back when I tent stitch its a series of long /////
It helps so your stitching thread doesn't slip under the weave of the fabric

ABCDE
When I tent stitch:
Up at 2
Down at A
Up at 3
Down at B
Up at 4
Down at C
And since you are going to try 18 count fabric, I would recommend picking up a sz 26 needle. Most kits give you a 24 which will work, but a 26 is a little smaller and will slide through the holes a bit easier. I use a 26 most is the time.

Re: 2 over 1?
I'm currently using 26 on my 14ct Aida and from memory the Kinkade kit comes with a 28 which I also ordered from Sew and So.
