Childlike backstitching - Done!

Post by debupnorth »

I'm looking for a backstitched alphabet that looks like a young child's printing. I want to chart out a child's letter to Santa for one of my stockings & I'm trying to find a realistic primative-type font to use. Something 4-8 spaces high would work best.

The closest I've come, is the lettering around the Santa w/bag & tree in the following book. Unfortunately, it's missing the letters c, D, g, N, o, u, and v. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Christmas-Homes ... 0860087884 (Page down to the second small photo under the main one)

I could try winging it, but I'm really trying to find an easier (& quicker) way of getting this done. Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I am going to the "big" library on Thursday- I'll take a look through some of their books. I know I've seen a chicken scratch alphabet somewhere.

Fun idea!

I just suggested to Rose that somewhere, I wish I could remember, I saw something about using a font that you like from your computer and printing it out and then tracing it on to a graph or a chart made for cross stitch designs. I have looked through a bunch of my alphabet books and didn't see anything like a young child's printing.
I love different fonts and found two that look like a child's

catchup and keyport are two fonts I have that might work.

This is what I want to stitch on the stocking - I found it printed on a fabric stocking during my Pinterest wanderings & thought it would be cute stitched up:

Dear Santa,
I've been
good all
year! No
matter what
the evidence
suggests.

MaggieM - I did scratch out something, but I'm not completely happy with it - so if you can find something at the big library, I'd love to hear about it!

Carole - That's a great idea about tracing over printed out fonts - the original of the text was typewritten, but when I couldn't find anything in backstitching, I went with the scrawl look. I'll have to rethink the typed look again! :D

Reta - That was one of the first places I looked since I have it bookmarked - none were quite what I was trying for, bummer!

Big hugs for all your help!! :grouphug:

The writing that is on Winnie the Pooh cross stitch patterns is childlike, would that work for you?

Make sure it isn't copyright, though. Disney is ferocious in protecting their property. :?

I took a look through books at the library last night
Didn't find anything- they were all "pretty" alphabets
I've been thinking about this though, and similar to the Keyport font Carole posted, for kids handwriting, you'll need uneven spacing and letter sizes. And letters that don't quite follow the grid pattern in our fabric. Everything I found had uniform letter sizes, or was very blocky.

Have you looked into a Winnie the Pooh sampler? My library didn't have any Pooh or Disney books- but I am sure there are some, somewhere that you could Inter Library Loan.

What if you tried printing the words with your left hand (or right if you are left handed) and then charting those on graph paper or cross stitch. I know that my printing with my left hand is definitely not the most adult printing I've seen.

Thanks for all the great ideas & suggestions - I did look at some more fonts online & the Winnie the Pooh sampler for inspiration, and even thought about having my 8 year-old niece write it out for me ! Anyway, this is what I finally came up with - what do you think?

This is pretty much my own scratchings and if anyone wishes to copy it - go ahead & have at it!
Stay tuned in my SAL section (in the not too distant future) to see how it stitches up.

:applesauce: I think that will be perfect. And even more special because you charted it yourself! I can't wait to see how it looks stitched.
