floss conversion/subsitution question

Post by nhmomquilts »

Good evening ladies! Hope everone is well and happily stitching :D Wondering if I could request some assistance. I have been working on Stoney Creek's Peace of Christmas Collection (Ice Skaes on Fence, "Peace").

My dilemma is with the skate blades portion. In the 2008 pattern it calls for DMC Glissengloss #000 Bright White and #901 Silver from their Rainbow Blending Threads Collection (which apparently no longer exists). They were to be combined with DMC's #318 Pewter Grey Light, #415 Pearl Grey, and #762 Pearl Grey Light.

I have tried subsittuting some of the metallics from DMC but found they were either too dark or too harsh and did not fit well with the piece. Subsequently, I ordered the only 4 offerings in their Satin Series (#S4#15, S5200, #SS762 and #S414) for grey/silver tones.

Below is a link to the pattern. Hopefully you can see what I'm talking about. I am having a very difficult time figuring out how to manage this. As I've never seen Glissengloss, I have no point of reference for the "effect" meant to be achieved.

BTW, there is a Nor' Easter coming into New Hampshire this Saturday night into Sunday, therefore Prime Stitching Time is rapidly approaching!!! :applesauce: :D :applesauce:  Any advice, thoughts and suggestions would be most welcomed. Thank you in advance for your support!!! Hapyy Stitching! Blessings, Linda

Are you sure they don't exist any more? I just did a google search for glissen gloss rainbow and came up with these at 123 Stitch: Glissen Gloss Rainbow Blending Thread which shows the two colours you listed.

I think that kimkat_tkl is correct and that you can order them from 123 or an alternative is to do the conversion and see if you can find what you are looking for from Krenik Blending Filament.

I would never use DMC Metallic as it is the devils thread even with Thread Heaven.

My humblest thank you -- I had no idea about 123 Stitch  You ladies amaze me!!! :applesauce: I am grateful for your time :cake: :coffee:

Is Krenik the best floss? I have never seen it, but observe references to it here on the boards all the time. Should I change? How does it compare to DMC? (what's readily available in NH)

I'm with Rose. The only place DMC metallics belong is in the trash.

Dont get me wrong.. I don't think blending filament is fun either- but I do think its much much much better than DMC metallics.
I've only used kreinik blending filament, not Glissen Gloss. Its thin. You usually use it with 1 length of floss. It adds just a little sparkle.
Some JoAnns craft stores have basic Kreiniks.. maybe the ones you need.
Its sold on a narrow spool and comes in different weights so make sure to grab the blending filament

Happy snowstorm.. as long as you are inside, with a nice cuppa something and a stitch project to work on. We're supposed to get snow this weekend too- no plans to change- I've already got the weekend to myself.

The Glissen Gloss thread is easy to use - or at least I found it so and it sits well with the DMC thread beside it. Look in Tips and Tricks for how to Railroad your stitching to get the 2 threads lying side by side. :D

I have used both the Krenik and the Glissen Gloss and they are comparable. If you can get the Glissen gloss from 123 I would go with that but Krenik has it's good points as well.

We all have our differing opinions on the board - but I think most of us are united on the fact that DMC metallics are the Devil's Thread - any other metallic is preferable to that! I've found Glissen Gloss very easy to use and Kreinik is fine, my favourite is Rainbow Gallery's Petite Treasure Braid which is the equivalent to #4 Kreinik Braid. Hopefully you can get hold of what you need at 123.stitch and save yourself the hassle of worrying whether a conversion will look the same!

MaggieM1750...seems as though there's never much difference betwen Minnesota and New Hampshire!!!

Mrs Milky Kid, Rose and Squirrel ---I just went to another JoAnn's...no Glissen Gloss or Krenik. That's ok, I'll just move to another location within the project until my (now placed) order arrives.

Thank you for your insight into Kreinik and Blending Filaments....I really have to figure out how/where to learn about this stuff!!! Apparently I have been living under the very Granite our state is made of!!

Everyone enjoy your weekend happily stitching :toast: :choc: !!! Blessings, Linda
