Hmm, I've only ever snapped one needle before. With all your tales of needle breakages, it's making me wonder whether there's some form of extreme sewing that I don't know about
I use DMC and John James usually and don't use a needle threader. I think the John James are sturdier but then I think in the space of about 6 years, even with multiple projects on the go, I've only bought 2 packs of size 28 needles and still have them all bar the 1 that snapped.

I can only use gold plated needles due to allergy and have found gold Permin needles from Sew and sogreat value and quite hard wearing. They come in a little tube of 20. The gold ones from the cross stitch guild are fantastic but too expensive for the way I stitch as I use a needle organiser and might have hundreds of needles on the go, spread over various projects.
I use DMC needles and rarely have a problem. Though I don't use a needle organizer, the way that I use my bobbin containers means that I also may have at least a hundred if not more needles in use. Anything other than DMC would be too expensive, I think. Also each needle doesn't get used as much so that may be why they last longer. I hate threading and do use a needle threader if it takes more than 3 attempts. Mostly 28's and then 26's for my afghans.

This thread got me looking also as I have been having trouble with breaking too. I have used piecemaker needles with my quilting and can vouch that they are good my quilt needles do bend but with quilting to me that is preferred and I will reach for them over a new one every time. I don't think with a thicker tapastry needle you would have that problem at all. I did find a website to buy bohin in bulk and it looks like she will oversea items also if needed. I have not shopped here before but I bookmarked it for the next time I order needles. http://www.anitalittlestitches.com/bohinneedles.html" target="_blank

Never had one break But have a few bent ones which I still use
And I still have some of each unused
I think that the ones that were made more than 2 or 3 years ago were made much better than most of the ones made today. I used to be able to use DMC needles and have them last really well, unfortunately, they have resorted to using material in them now that doesn't hold up at all, so it's Bohin needles for me from now on

They were definitely made better back then - I dive on old packets if I find them for that reason.
But for myself there is an acid in my skin that eats through stuff - I even had a gold ring crumble into pieces once. My silver flute has major tarnishing even after 1 short use and yet my music teacher can use it for a month and it stays shiny - she says she get s student every so often with the problem. I'm also allergic to the extent that I swell up like a balloon if I try to wear or touch some metals for any length of time - so I think it's probably just a body thing.
Me too mystonique its like are skin is almost to acidic and tarnashes the metal. I do the same as you and have a slight nickel allergy to go with. Wonder how many of us with this problem are having needle issues as well?

I have a lot of feeling loss in my fingers especially on my left hand and I tend to hold the needles really tight, that is how most of mine bend, but it's the eye distortion that bothers me, it seems to pinch so that the thread won't fit through.
I mostly use John James, but they seem to get all warpy at the eye.
I just found anitalittlestitches.com and she sells all needle brands in bulk. I picked up some Bohin to try. It looks like she also ships anywhere.

I tend to be a little hard on needles, needles I have had for a while tend to get a slight curve. I used to break the eyes on a regular basis. I've switched to John James mainly because I can buy the petites in bulk...I use http://www.anitalittlestitches.com/needles.html" target="_blank. I only used gold needles when working with silk. I've convinced myself that the thread passes easier.
