Storing you mags

Post by welsh wendy »

Hello fellow stitchers

I found that my magazines were getting a but out of hand and could not find anything to keep them in tidy.

I look for binders but found them a bit expensive so I then had any idea.

I got a 3.45kg empty box of washing powder and cut the lid off and it will hold about 20 magazines.

The front and side can be used for writing an index on so that you know what projects are in the mags with a quick look.

Hope this helps some one.

What a great idea. You could cover them with nice wrapping paper too. I just use cardboard files but they're the collapsible kind and if I forget to hold the bottom when I pick them up you can guess what happens

I use cardboard files, too, although have never managed to dump them. Give me time! I wish I had the cash to spend on slipcases, which would also keep the dust and spiders out.

Some of my mags are in binders, but I found them just too expensive. Especially as the collection grows...

Here's a problem: if you put them away too carefully, you forget to go back through them. Some people keep a note in a little pattern book, but I draw the line at that! :)

I keep my magazines and leaflets in a filing drawer. They are placed in alphabetical order according to the title/theme. When I am looking for a particular idea for a cross-stitch piece, I have a computer file that lists the graphs under categories, i.e. Animals, Baby, Samplers, etc. I can then pull out all the magazines and peruse the designs to see if I have a chart that is appropriate.

*sobs* This is making me feel so guilty... as I throw my mags into what my partner calls "the nightmare closet", which I like to think of as my "craft closet" (he is under stickt instuctions nver to enter it, as I do have some sort of system in my mess)... most of my mags have rips and tears, and I also often draw on the charts in them, to modify them to my needs...

StitchingAgain: Hooray and good for you! I keep most of my fabric, threads, UFOs (which is why probably they never get finished...), notions, card blanks and everything else in wicker baskets in the back (notionally guest) room. I never allow DH in if I am having a guddle about. Too distressing for us both!

I had the same problem but unfortunately I didn't have room to keep the mags at all. I decided as I didn't go back to the mags for anything other than the charts I liked I bought a paper strimmer and laminater. I now take out the charts I want to keep and laminate them so that they can be kept tidy and photocopied without getting ruined. I then hole punch them and file them by categories in folders. The rest of the mags I recycle.

Lamination is such a good idea! I might use that for all the downloads I've collected and which are getting progressively tattier as time wears on. Good thinking! :king:

aww Mags! never...we take good care of our Mags.

Now magazines..lol..
I stole a comic book box from my hubby..it's white and a rectangle shape with lid.
I have them grouped by magazine then by date.
I have fun flipping through each one as I know if I'm looking for a certain holiday, what month to pull and thumb through.
If you get a comment of a ,I must be holding my :coffee:

I recently went for a dig through mine looking for a particular pattern from eons ago but that was the first time in 1000 years since I've looked at them. I keep them in binders for the most part but my lace magazines are in magazine box thingie. Those are only quarterly and are thin so it will take along time before the box is full.

As an old chemist and a collector of old lace and textiles.....I would be a bit careful of the soap box. The residual chemicals in there will most likely break down the paper of the magazines...but they'll smell nice!
