help with new thread

Hi everyone, this is my first post on here and i hope some one can help me, my mum had a massive collection of thread that she has given me, i don't know where she got it from and i have never heard of it before.
The make is RED HEART STRANDED COTTON. has anyone ever used this and if so do you know of any conversion charts for it for more well known threads?
any help would be massively appreciated!!!

Hi mousey welcome to the forum. I have never heard of these threads bt I know in one of the topics on here there is a link to thread conversion sites. It may be in the internet sites topic which is at the top of each board category.

Hi and welcome to the forum. If there are not too many colours maybe you could use a colour chart for one of the more familiar names and make out your own conversion chart.

yeah i just spoke to my mum and she said i might just have to work it out for myself, nothing is ever simple is it lol. i can only find red heart knitting yarn, it's really strange. my mum said she got them at a cross stitch fair she went to years ago. anyways thankyou so much for all your help and welcomes. it will be nice to meet other people who cross stitch, none of my friends are into it. just me and my mum but she can't stitch any more cos she has arthritis. anyways thanks again, hope to speak to you all more xxx

My mum found a huge box of threads at a craft fair years ago too, lots of colours and about 6 of each colour in the box, I can't remember the make, but they did not seem to be linked to any conversion chart, my Daughter used lots of them when she was younger to make bracelets and things, there were not enough subtle changes to do very much with, and they had a different finish to Anchor and DMC, so I cold not mix them, I used them mostly for cards with flower designs, where the exact shade was not an issue.

I think that you are going to find that this was a discontinued thread from years ago and so there is no conversion charts for them. That is sad because if there is a lot of thread you really don't want to just dump them. I found a similar problem when I inherited my MIL old stash. She had taken of all of the labels off so had no idea of the brand or the color. Most were a silk thread and hard to work with but I have over the years found ways to use them. Like Jilly said in areas were color matching is not so important. Do you have an LNS close you could take them in and maybe th ladies there could help you with some suggestions

There's a forum on this website, so it might be worth asking the question there as well. This web site brought back lots of memories for me. As a teenager, I worked in the canteen of the Coats factory in Glasgow one summer. It's gone now and I can't remember too much about the job except cutting up lots of meat (yuck!). But employees could buy extemely cheap thread lots from the factory shop and as I did lots of dressmaking at that time I bought bag after bag (I think most of my wages came back to them!!). I've still got some of them left in my sewing box.

Hi and welcome mousey....I hope you'll get the help you need with those threads...and maybe if you can't have luck on the conversion thing...you can still use it freely with projects that don't require exact color shades just as what Jilly has suggested...something like small designs for cards or the like...

I've nothing much to add to what everyone else has already suggested. It's easy to get thread charts for Anchor and DMC, so doing some matching on a fine summer's day might be quite fun.

I bought a bag of about 100 threads when I first started cross stitch earlier this year. They don't match any of the charts as they are the store's own brand. I am using them for charts from magazines, matching the colours as near as possible to the colours on the pattern. I've had to buy a couple DMC threads where I didn't have the right colour, but they look okay once worked.

I'm still not sure if they were such a good buy!! But I love looking at my pretty colours of threads...

I just went through my lace thread books and didn't find reference to it. It most likely is a small house brand that didn't last long. I bought vintage linen at an antiques shop for my lace and found out that it was discontinued in the early 60's. The lady at the company was very surprised to find out that there was any still bouncing around. If it's in good shape and is similar in finish to DMC or Anchor, go ahead and mix it in to your pieces or use it stand alone and no one will be the wiser.
