What is the best type of hoop?

Post by Mrsadm »

Or what is your favorite? I am thinking of getting one for small projects while traveling. Must fit into carry on luggage. Normally I use a scroll frame. Thanks for your suggestions!

Like Karen.. I too love my Q Snaps.
All of my projects are portable. I am not home much, so my projects travel with me. I use either an 8x8" or an 8x11" snap frame for most things.

When I fly, I like using a spring tension hoop. Its less bulky than a Snap is, which makes it easier to take out and put away. And sooo much faster to get projects on/ off when I need to move it around. I'm not sure what size I have- its a 4 or 5" diameter.

When I fly, I keep my stitch items in a zip top file folder that I picked up at the office supply store. Cheap, but sturdier than a ziploc bag, and keeps all my things contained but easy to grab.

Safe travels :airplane:

I do all the small stuff, 18" or less, free hand.

I bought a set of plastic hoops that came with several different sizes. I like them fine for tension, but they are a bit unwieldy when it comes to repositioning them.

I have a snap hoop but I haven't had a chance to use it. Seems like it would be the easiest to move around.

I also like q-snaps, thought I usually carry large enough purses/bags that I don't think traveling with one would be too bad for me.

I generally use q-snaps and love them. On projects smaller than my HAEDs I have wooden hoops that I use, though am thinking about trying some spring type hoops. On my afghans I use a large wood hoop. I tried the q-snaps and it just felt wrong. I haven't tried the hoop on my Lowery stand but the q-snaps work perfectly there.

Thank you everyone! I think I might try a small qsnap as people seem to love them.

I had a horrible experience once with a hoop, although a lot of the problem was my own fault. Years ago I was stitching a design for a gift, and left the plastic hoop on the fabric for maybe a month or two, until it was done. I NEVER could get the round crease out. I washed it, ironed it wet many times; nothing would get it out. (It was aida cloth; perhaps linen would have been more forgiving, but I'm not planning to try it!)

I still have this souvenir of the perils of using a hoop.

Seems you have made a choice but I will just add my delight of having found the q-snaps. I just love them for ease and tension.
