My temari

Post by KarinvdB »

Temari is a japanese craft which involves wrapping a ball in thin thread (with various layers underneath, I wrap around styrofoam balls, most instructions tell you to use yarn first for a soft base though) onto which you embroider geomatric patterns.

Together with my mom I did a Temari workshop at the Handwerkbeurs Zwolle in 2011. Last year we did another day workshop by the same teacher. We did some at home but those times were few and far between.

Because cross stitching wasn't working for my shoulder I picked up Temari again.

My mom and I own several books, among which a great one by Barbara B. Seuss (Japanese Temari: A Colorful Spin on an Ancient Craft, ISBN 1933308125) and a couple of japanese books, but those are at my moms so I ordered Barbara's new book (Temari Techniques: A Visual Guide to Making Japanese Embroidered Thread Balls, ISBN 193330832X) which I just got.

These four balls are all done by looking at various examples around the internet and figuring out the way they are done (with varying degrees of success).

The tan ball with bands and buckles is a pattern by Barbara Seuss, I think it's in the first book I mentioned above but I did this one without a pattern.

The black ball with interlocking diamonds is inspired by Julie and Co on Etsy

Image

The red ball with gradiated red/pinks/creams is inspired by Kumo Temari. I'm not sure on this one yet, I might add a band around the equator.

Image

The black ball with blue stars/flowers was inspired by Midnight Star by Julie and Co on Etsy. This one uses Durable embroidery cotton (size about 20 I think) The rest was done with DMC Perle 5.

These are stunning! I agree with Carole, not enough hours in a day.
The black one with the interlocking diamonds is reminiscent of a Ukrainian Easter egg pattern.
Thank you for showing us tis beautiful craft.
Cheers :toast:

I know exactly what you mean. There's so many crafts and arts I like. I just can't find the time for them all. I do whichever has my fancy most at the time but even then there's plenty I'd like that I can't find the time to do, one of which is drawing/painting....

I'd never heard of these and was quite curious but I'm glad I looked as these are brilliant. And your photography with them on the white tray is inspired :applesauce:
